A6 - Friday, September 21, 1984 - North Shore News WE editorial page NEWS VIEWPOINT The Pope's gift he visit of Pope John Paul Il proved one thing beyond all doubt. It proved that people of every denomina- tion, and of none, harbor a deep inward yearning for cooperation, love and hope among members of the human family. The huge welcoming crowds at Abbotsford and the Stadium, and the vast TV audience, showed it to be a yearning that transcends even strong individual differences on social, political and economic issues. The spontaneous warmth of feeling that flowed between the Holy .Father and those who thronged to greet him was all the more remarkable becauSe many of the latter cer- tainly don’t share the views he expounds on such controversial topics as divorce, abor- tion, birth control, the role of women and the celibacy of priests. Indeed, John Paul II is perhaps the most paradoxiral figure ever to head the world’s 800 million Catholics--- more human, more widely travelled and in many other ways more modern than any of his predecessors. Yet at the same time a Staunch defender of the church’s centuries- old teachings, offering no quick, easy fixes for today’s secular conflicts. Ultimately, however, it was the man himself who prevailed. In his person the crowds recognized, above all else, the very embodiment of GOODNESS.---and the rebirth of hope which that promises. His repeated gift to them was the message that human beings are always infinitely more im- portant than the problems they create for themselves. To the- extent that. we have grasped that message, we are the richer for his presence among us. Scary statistics ast month, a year after Victoria abolished compulsory vehicle testing in the name of restraint, Highways Minister Alex Fraser reveals that three out of four buses and trucks inspected in roadchecks needed repairs—one in three of them being in such a dangerous state that they were prompt- ly removed from the road. If that's the case with commercial vehicles, we shudder to think about the mechanical condition of half the private cars now barrelling along the highway towards us! The question is often asked whether Hong Kong’s policies and success can be repeated elsewhere. We may get an answer from an experiment about to be launched in, of all places, South Africa. The Ciskei is a so-called ‘homeland’ of blacks in the Republic of South Afnica. It has nominally independent status as a nation, though many foreign countries refuse to recognize m. There is a parhament and a govern ment with a President The post office issues its own stamps Income and living stan dards ino the Cusker are deplorably low) There are a few textile factomes and some agriculture but the main ex port is labor to neighboring South Affica industries. Soon truck- ing, bus and taxi licenses can be bought for $1 at every post office. There ts talk of removing all building codes and restric- tions on land ownership. There are proposals for land without taxes and fees for most government services. The revenue from import duties, collected by South Africa and passed on to the Ciskei government, would be sufficient to finance the minimal government that the scheme envisions.
