Chemical storage ban looms By PAT RICH: The first step towards banning the storage of hazardous materials in the District of North Vancouver was taken Monday by District council. By a vote of 5-2 council passed a motion to have staff prepare an amendment to the zoning bylaw to prohibit the above ground bulk storeage of hazardous chemicals. The move came during a discussion of the Community Hazards Task Force Report tabled November 10. but not yet discussed by council. The main recommenda- tions of the report were to move Hooker Chemical from the North Shore and restrict the construction of similar facilities. Mayor Don Bell told coun- cil that a lengthy discussion of the recommendations would have to take place next year but he said action should be taken on a couple of items this year. Time catches Crist out North Vancouver District Alderman Ernie Crist’s at- tempt to discuss conditions in a North Van apartment building was shouted down Monday as being inap- propriate Crist referred to a North Shore News story Sunday which told of a couple who moved out of their Whitely Court apartment after part of the ceiling collapsed Let’s be practical! A recommendation to in- vite the task force members to continue for another year was passed with little argu- ment. But the proposal to ban bulk storeage of hazardous materials was vehemently opposed by Alderman Jim Ball and John Lakes. Lakes said although he might support the idea in principle “we are dealing with a subject that could be especially hazardous ... and expensive.” He felt the move could have significant legal’ im- plications and said he felt he did not have enough infor- mation to deal with the ques- tion. Ball agreed and _ said “maybe we're overreacting to the pressures thal are put on everbody these days con- He suggested that this was “a ternble state of affairs.” but before he could continue Crist was told that council only had five minutes left to meet and he should phrase his comments as a question. Ld Alderman Mary Segal said it is “appropriate that we (council) set the wheels in motion ... to exact a little more control over storage of hazardous materials.” Bell asked council to “ac- cept the initiative I’m taking as mayor” and told council members that any informa- tion they wanted on the sub- ject would be supplied before the actual bylaw was discussed. During debate Hooker Chemical was strongly criticized by Alderman Gor- don Rose for its failure to send a representative to a re- cent conference on hazar- dous chemicals held in Toronto. “They were very con- spicious by their absence.” Rose said, refernng to the fact that all other major chemical companies set representatives. “none of council's business.” In the News report last week tenants wwere quoted as accusing ‘management of suggesting they should put up with infenor conditions because they were paving low rents The statement should have read (owners Tenants say the building managers and maintenance man have done everything they can do to help the situavion. 922-1204 “I'm disappointed and really upset that they didn’t see fit to attend that con- ference.” Council deferred until next week discussion of an application thal is currently before council to expand chemical storage facilities at one location on the water- front. aw f A9 - Wednesday, December 17, 1980 - North Shore News ya PINK PEARL RESTAURANT UST) EAR Te SEB FB cakMinese CUISINE Will Be Open Boxing Day & New Years Day Closed Dec. 25 & Jan. 5&6 Hrs.: Mon. - Thurs. 11-10, Fri. & Sat. 11-12, Sun. 4:30-10 FREE LOCAL DELIVERY 620 Westview Shopping Centre North Vancouver 984-9147 of CHILDREN’S WEAR 73 to '/2 OFF A selected group of Dresses, Jumpers, Blouses, Pants and Infants’ Wear Sizes Infants’ to 14 tephane’ THE FASHION CENTRE FOK CHILDREN HIC MHMOND CENTRE 273 4.42 5 PACIFIC CENTRE 669 2513 LANSDOWNE PARK 278 6434 € OQUIT AM CENTRE 464 1741 OAKRIDGE 261 3617 PARK KOYAL 926 5616 (U0 DFORD TOWN CENTRE 545 2622 SURREY PLACE CHINOOK CENTRE CALGARY
