A remarkable im- provement in rates of tur- nover..and absenteeism among. employees of U.S, companies which have been using the flexible work hours system for three years or longer is revealed in a study | by the American Marketing Association. The survey covered 800 American firms. While only six. per cent: of all U.S. employees so, far. are working on: flexible schedules, the popularity of the scheme among em- ployees may be judged from the fact that the percentage has doubled since 1975, says ‘James’ Bagnall, writing in The Financial Post. Better. morale, produc- tivity and recruiting op- portunities, coupled with reduced = absenteeism, ' emerge as the chief benefits of “flextime” working. An impressive 97 per cent of the companies surveyed reported improved em- ployee morale, while 51 per cent said productivity had increased (as against only five per cent that claimed it had dropped). Two thirds of the firms reported lower absentecism; 80 per cent said employce punctuality had improved; and 62 per cent found the system a help in recruiting. These benefits appear to outweigh any accompanying problems of flextime, which are borne chiefly by managers. . Nearly one half of the companies polled said that the system made the job of their managers more dif- ficult. About one third of them mentioned increased problems in} the scheduling of work and in maintaining overall staffing levels. The precise method of organizing flextime varies from company to company. Basically, however, the system means that em- ployees work a set number. of hours each week, but can vary their starting and finishing times within fairly - wide limits to suit individu convenience some arriving at work and leaving earlicr than others, who = arrive and leave later. Generally speaking, the aim is to have all employces on the job during certain -“core™ hours of the working day. Under other . systems employees may be given the option of working longer hours (up to 10 or 12) per day, compensated by three- or four-day breaks at regular intervals. ex ime working, if ever it is dely adopted, could SYNDICATE LTD. | * We can show you EVERYTHING you always wanted to know about saving taxes * Our book ‘“‘How To Ease The Tax Bite’’ has tated 12 waya to legally reduce your taxes. © A qualified financial planner is available to show you how to save taxes now and for years to come. © Mall card tor your tree book. ® Hurry there are only 43 days left to reduce your 1976 tax. send Coupon or call: Fred C.
