Moodyville is East of Lower Lonsdale White many people think Lower Lonsdale and Mocdyville are interchangeable, Moodyville was east of Lower Lonsdale near where the grain elevators are today. Moodyville was the first non-First Nations village on the North Shore. His- -torians say they feel strongly that Lower Lonsdale not be called Moodyville. “It is “geographicaily and historically incorrect , to call’ Lower Lonsdale Moodyville," said June Thompson, Assistant Archivist for the North Vancouver Museum and Archives. While Lower Lonsdale is under- going major development these days, Moodyville is pretty much just a page or two in the history books. it wasn't always that way. The town site of Moodyville originated with a sawmill built by one of the first North Shore settlers in the early 1860s. The mill was near bankruptcy just a few years after it was built. That's when Sewell Prescott Moody, an Ameri- can from Maine, bought it and returned the sawmill te profitability selling raw fumber all over the world. He died at sea in 1875 and the town that grew around ~ the mill took his name. In honour of Moodyville, the City will be changing the name of the Low Level Road to Moody- ville Road. Cominemorative plaques wilt also be established in the area. Streeter: “The City is looking for a new name for Lower Lonsdaic.
