Rivers Day weekend with WV MP lauded for political skills From page 1 Reynolds said he has been taking the calls on justice sub- jects on behalf of the party since the sudden departure of Okanzgan MP Jim Hart, who had previously held the Hart quit the caricus and the party over the much-baily- jooed, but since subdued issue of Preston Manning's Reform party leadership. “T just try todo a good job for my constituents,” said Reynolds from the Sunshine Coast where he was attending a series of meetings with resi- dents of his riding. “Whatever they want me to do [li do.” A Lions Bay resident, Reynolds, 56, was fast a Social Credit provincial environment minister until °91 when he left politics. Before that he served as Speaker of the provincial Iegis- lature. He has also served two terms as a Progressive Conservative MP. His previous Reform portfolios include fish- cries and immigration critic. “I’m having a good time,” said Reynolds of his latest stint in Ortawa. Refarm House Leader Langiey-Abbotsford MP Randy White praised Reynolds’ skills and experi- nee. He said those factors led him to give che North Shore MP the nod. “It (the appointmenr) shows the skills and abilities of John Reynolds,” said White. “Good stuff rises to the top. “As far as the opposition goes, it’s one of the highest profile (positions) in the House of Commons because of the size of the portfolio. [ MP John Reynolds: “t just try to doa good job for my constituents.” You gotta put people in there who can handle that profile.” Meanwhile, the Reform party’s other White — North Vancouver MP Ted ~ has not fared nearly as well as his West Vancouver counterpart. In his second term or sixth year in the party, White is the party's direct democracy critic. “I really couldn’t comment on that (Reynolds’ appoint- ment) but I know Ted likes his role as direct democracy crit- ic,” said White’s assistant Graham Worth on behalf of his vacationing boss. Reynolds said the issues most likely to occupy him in his new position include the Young Offenders Act, a review of the judiciary and the ever- present constitution issues sur- rounding Quebec. All three are likely to receive a lot of attention in the coming ycars. “You folks just got one of the highest profile spots in opposition right now,” summed up the Fraser Valley’ 's White.
