Awards encourage good d design

THE face of North
Vancouver City is
quickly changing.

And as new developments
take shape near Lonsdale
Avenue and along the water-
front, the city’s Advisory
Design Panel reviews develop-
ment proposals and encour-
ages quality designs.

One of the ways it accom-
plishes this through
Advisory Design Panel
Awards Recently, three
awards were given iv ‘he city,

The project at 18u! Grand
Boulevard received the Award
of Excellence trom the ADP.

The existing home on or
property wos built in 1946 on
nwo legal Jots. Phough nor
included oon the city’s
Heritage Inventory, ihe build-
ing reflected the i image of his-
tore Grand Bouin vard devel-
opment dating back to 1910.

When the property was
sold, the building could have
been demolished and nwo new
single family dwelling built on
the property. Instead, Crearive
Urban) Developments pre-
posed to retain: the existing
house and resubdivide the
lands to create a new parcel in
the rear yard, facing USth
Street.

The new home is contem-
porary, but it refigets the his-
toric qualities of the area.

Along with Creative Urban
Developments, the award
went to Charles Moorhead
Architect and owners Elonnha
and Hugh Mitchell.

An apartment develop-
ment at 119 East 6th St. woa
an honorable mention by the
ADP.

The relatively small site
presented a design challenge
for Besharat Friars Architects
and Keith Korotuk Landscape
Architect, hired by Inlet View
Development,

Their response was an
innovative use of the lane for
individual pedestrian and
vehicular access to some
dwelling units, including a
secured “autocoure” entry.
The design concept was inth:
enced by developments in San
Franisce.

The commercial building

building for V 1500 Holdings
Inc. which addresses both
Lonsdale and Sth St. with a
curved corner ing a) “drum”
shape.

The ghved windows,
canopies and roofiep cements
contribute to the building’s
contemporary appearance,
