Jefferd retired from his position late last year. A new emergency program coordinator is yet to be named. The NWVEP is best known to North Shore residents for its 50- member North Shore Rescue Team. The team’s high profile mountain search and rescue activi- ties have over the years evolved to become an integral component of the emergency response system serving the North Shore. But in his role as emergency Program coordinator Jefferd’s mandate also included responsibil- ity for emergency planning and coordination of emergency and disaster services on the North Shore. The local program provides support for volunteers who supply emergency aid to the three North Shore municipalities and is operated in conjunction with the Provincial Emergency Program and Emergency Preparedness Canada. Add to this jurisdictional mix three municipalities operating with three emergency programs and three fire departments, a provincial ambulance service and two police departments, and a sense of the logistical challenge involved in developing an all-encompassing approach to disaster By MICHAEL BECKER News Reporter planning becomes self evident. “When I came in 1978, there was a need for a disaster plan for the North Shore. That took a bit of coordination, but the disaster plan was never formally approv- ed,’” he said. A regional plan bas- ed on the three municipal emergency plans is expected to be adopted this year. ‘Each department wants its own autonomy. This works against at- tempting to plan disaster response on a regional basis. That’s not to say that cooperation doesn’t exist — it does,’’ Jefferd said. He points to the North Shore Rescue Team as a truly tangible success. ‘‘It’s become very profes- sional, better equipped and better rganized.”’ oreefferd brought to his job an Olympian sense of military plann- ing. He spent six months in Mon- treal at the 1967 summer Olympics coordinating computer input data, events results, Swiss timing, sports officials and security. In his Cana- dian Armed Forces incarnation, Jefferd worked as an avionics technician coordinating radio communications, radar and in- strument technicians. 1989 LITTLE LEAGUE | ‘BASEBALL REGIS’ RATION T-Ball to Big League DATES Feb. 10th Feb. 11th Feb. 12th Feb. 11th Feb. 12 LEAGUE Lynn Valley North Van Central Feb. 6th Feb. 7th Feb, 6th Feb, 7 Forest Hills West Vancouver Feb. 4th Feb. 11th Feb. 12th Feb. 6th Mt.
