Well, batter up, because the boys
of summer are getting ready to
swing, and in the dining trade the
restaurants of summer are stretch-
ing their culinary limbs.

We are talking tables for two
beside an open taverna. window
caressed by a warm breeze and
accompanied with a chilled
schooner of pilsner. A little full-vol-
ume Bazouki music to set the tone,
and maybe some boisterous
Mediterranean banter.

Off to somewhere Greck, then,
to check in with the eternal restau-

-rant boys of summer.

But not just anywhere Greek,
To Kypriaki and its brand of
full-throttle fun in or out of the sun,

Greek taverna is closing in on its
20th anniversary, a milestone by
any measure. Presided over by
owner Kike Redondo, its atmos-
phere is customarily raucous.

Informality is strictly enforced.
Ties are discouraged —- unless you
wish to donate yours to Kypriaki's
cravat trophy bouquet hanging from
the taverna’s ceiling —~ and good
spirits abound,

Apart from a colorful exterior
mural that has been painted on its
east wall by Delia the belly dancer,
not a whole lot has changed at
Kypriaki over the past two decades.
And dichard Kypriaki fans would
argue that not much needs to be
changed, :

After all, with its basic Grecian
fun formula of wine, women and
song, the tavema delivers an
authentic Greek experience that, on
a good night, can move well
beyond the boisterous into inspired
