The restaurateur attempting to apply the foregoing Great Grecian Formula is, of course, the Great Greek himself, Nick Vavaris. And it is not his first attempt at winning a neighborhood pub appli- cation for his historic Esplanade location. Vavaris made a neighborhood pub pitch two years ago, figuring that with the closure of such leg- endary local watering holes as the Olympic and St. Alice hotels, Fast Eddie's discotheque and Tugs ill- fated pub at the Lonsdale Quay Hotel, the Lower Lonsdale area could use another place of ferment- ed refreshment. Besides, his restaurant was in dire need of revitalization. But North Vancouver City Council rejected Vavaris’ pitch on June 15, 1992. The forces aligned against the Great Greek’s pub application are many. They have argued and con- tinue to argue that a pub at 107 West Esplanade would lead to such unsavory activities as “pub crawl- “ing” and result in the same loutish behavior generated by those who MY PLACE CAFE OPEN FOR DINNER | Fri. & Sat. from 5:30pm German / European Cuisine RESERVATIONS 988-8460 We weicome private 1 gatherings up to 25 guests. 250 E: Ist Street, North Vancouver {1 hock east of Rusty Gull) frequented Tugs at the Quay. Anti- Vavaris pub leaflets have also been circulated in the area by a group called the Citizens For A Safer Community. The leaflet warns of an influx of Rapid Transit rowdies that wiil be channeled to Nick’s pub via the SeaBus-SkyTrain connection, the North Shore terminus of which is only walking distance from the pro- posed pub site. According to the group's leaflet, said rowdies would: @ increase vandalism; W@ make more noise, thereby inter- rupt area sleep time; i destroy the Lower Lonsdale’s family atmosphere; @ raise public safety concerns; Bi increase drinking in area parks. Vavaris, however, just wants to eam a living in the Lower Lonsdale area the same way he has been eaming a living in the area off and on for the past 22 years. The Great Greek issa Lower Lonsdale original. He opened Dino's at the foot of Lonsdale in 1972. Four years later he opened Delo’s. Then in 1982 he embarked on his ultimately disas- trous venture into upscale dining at the Emerald Park Lodge, got caught in the crash of ‘83 and lost everything. But he battled back, and in 1986 Vavaris took over the old Keg building and through much person- al sweat and tears launched Your Place or Mine, which became the Great Greek, which became Nick's Place, which is still sort of the Great Greek, which Vavaris would like to’see become Nick’s Pub or ’ the Great Greek Pub or some such neighborhood watering hole bear- ing his name and featuring his Vavarian hospitality. Vavaris would put the pub upstairs and move his restaurant to_ the basement of the Coronation Block building. it’s a novel idea, and Vavaris has the experience and connections to make the pub fly. But the odds against his winning pub application approval from the city and the sur- rounding neighborhood are not good. A neighborhood survey is cur- rently being conducted, at Vavaris’ expense, to gather input on the pub proposal. its outcome will deter- mine whether the city approves Vavaris’ second pub pitch. If the Great Greek strikes out again, he may have to consider hanging up his restaurant cleats for good, Because even Great Greeks eventually run out of money and steam. , | ras | I ZFORI - 64 DINNER SPECIAL Enjoy one complimentary entree when a second entree E of equal or greater value is purchased.
