Nese By Anna Marie D'Angelo News Reporter _ Superintendent Bob Byam is now working for the undercover Coordinated Law Enforcement Unit in Vancouver. Byam, 54, was officer in charge of the North Vancouver detachment for almost four years. “The job, as superintendent, was a challenge in itself.” said Byam. While working in North Vancouver, Byam took a special interest in community policing. He said the detachment is moving from a reactive to a proactive stance concerning crime fighting. Byam said community policing programs. such as Block Watch, which involve participation by residents and the police, are “going to pay dividends” in the future in reducing crime. “We can't do it all by our- selves, we need the community,” said Byam. To date Block Watch encom- passes 30,000 North Van residents as participants. Through the pro- gram, these residents have taken : ee an active part in reducing burglar- ies in their neighborhoods by becoming more aware of suspi- cious activities. Other North Vancouver RCMP initiatives under Byam’s supervi- sion included the establishment of the bike patrol squad, the opening of two community policing offices and the expansion of the dog squad by two for a total of five canines. Byam was not present for the official opening of the Lynn Valley community pelicing centre on Tuesday. His last day in North Vancouver was Sept. 2. The Lynn Valley storefront policing office is located at Lynn Valley Centre.
