Lh ea Keep partisan politics out of constitutional discussion | 4 ‘Dear Editor: With reference to your article of Sept. 13, ‘‘Cook says no on Constitutional referendum vote,’’ I have several observations. Mary Collins, MP, comments on the number of seats B.C. will have in the House of Commons in the future. This ‘“What's in it for B.C.?" attitude is hardly the answer to national unity, nor is the impor- tant issue of the growth of gov- ernment. We do not need more government and we certainly do * not need 42 more MPs, as the Charlottetown Accord provides. A realistic examination of the size of federal ridings and effec- tive but affordabie representation’ is what is needed. . Ms, Collins also comments on setting up ‘‘yes’’ commitiees on the North Shore and having those ‘ committees appiy for federal funding. Are there not two sides to the referendum question? I presume so, as we are invited to vote ‘tyes’’ or ‘tno’? on Oct. 26. . Will the ‘‘no’* side also get fed- eral funding? How much money will be spent in order to promote and conduct this referendum? Al- though the issue is vitaly impor- tant to Canada, our federal tax dollars must be spent prudently and fairly, . ‘Your editorial in the same edi- tion correctly points out that im- portant information must be pro- vided to Canadians before Oct. 26. In my riding I am conducting a door-to-door campaign to discuss the accord with my constituents because I believe it is vitally im- portant for each to make a well- informed choice. I am also ar- ranging to go to each of the high schools and service clubs in my tiding to discuss the referendum. All of this is strictly on a neutral basis, as | have no inten- tion of getting involved in any “tyes’’ or ‘‘no’? movements. Peo- ple are certainly encouraged to do so if they wish, but I do not see that as my function. If asked what my persona! posi- tion on the referendum is, I state it. However, | do not intend to publicize my own view in your Newspaper or any other public forum. We should all try to keep discussion on an objective level — not to score political points. Canada deserves better than par- tisan debate! Jeremy Dalton, MLA West Vancouver-Capilano Food bank effort applauded Dear Editor: Regarding your article on Mr. Foster and his proposed North Shore Harvest organization that would distribute food to the needy on the North Shore: Too many of us in our com- fortable little world fail to under- stand the plight of a mother, single through no fault of her own, trying to feed her children, pay rent, and handle emergencies on a very limited welfare allot- ment, Can we imagine the anguish of a mother who cannot respond when her child asks for more to eat? ! wholly support Mr. Foster's initiative, and will help in any way that I can. I would suggest that a chartered accountant be asked to jein the organization, so that donors can be assured as to what disposition is made of the money they donate. Far too often charities become arrogant and secretive; they fail to remember that the public supplies their funds, and that they are morally obliged to give an ac- counting for all money spent.
