SO YOU'RE young. in pretty
good shape and you've got fight-
ning-fast reflexes. Fair enough,
but do vou have what it takes to
take on a cat crash without wear-
ing a safety belt?

Well, maybe not out @n the
highway, but no problem around
town, right? Wrong!

Even at 20 km/h — about the
speed in the mall parking Jot. your
face hits the steering wheel or the
windshield with about the same
force as lowering your head, put-
ling your hands behind your back,
and running full-ult into a steel

Now, at 50 kilometres per hour,
a person hits the inside of a car
with about the same force as the
Janding from a high-dive off a
ubree storey building. Sure, you
can brace yourself, if you can
grab the dash in 1/100th of a se-
cond and you have the strength to
bench press several thousand
pounds, because that’s what you'll
weigh when you start colliding
with the interior of your car.

By the way, those new air bags
are great, but they’re meant to
work with safety belts, not replace
them.

You know, of course, that not
using safety belts is against the
law in B.C. The fine is $35, more
if your passengers aren't buckled
up. But if you don’t really relate
to that law, there’s another one
that you will obey.

It’s called the law of physics,

pact. Great, here’s 2,000 pounds
of sameone else’s car piling into
you, and you're headed straight
into an oncoming wave of buckl-
ing metal.

Not even Super Dave would try
these stunts...at least not without
helmets, gloves or maybe even
fireproof shorts...and for sure,
not without a safety belt. Yet
many people, particularly men 16
to 25 years old, appear to believe
they can get by without them.

The statistics say otherwise. In
1989, 134 people from this age
group lost their lives in accidents
in which safety belts were avail-
able. Over two-thirds of therm
chose not to buckle up.

Could it be that the most out-
rageous, death defying feat in a
car is to ignore a few cheap shots
from your buddies and use your
safety belt?
