Using stucco as an exterior
surface will involve some
noteworthy procedures

BRICK AND wood, aluminum,
vinyl! and hardboard sidings are
commonly used for exterior walls.

However, stucco — an attrac-
tive, durable masonry surface —
is prevalent in many parts of the
country.

The use of stucco (usually one
part cement, three parts fine sand)
goes back centuries.

Painting or repainting stucco
involves some unique procedures,
according to experts at the Rohm
and Haas Paint Quality Institute.

Perhaps more than with any
other substrate, proper surface
preparation is vital to a successful
paint job.

The surface should be sound;
free of dirt, powdery dust, and
loose chalk; and rough enough to
ensure good adhesion of the
coating.

Some special situations found in
the painting of stucco, especially
when it is new or insufficiently
aged, are:

Aging and weathering are the
most desixable ways to prepare
stucco for painting. These natural
processes allow the stucco to dry
out, reduce the surface alkalinity
and add a beneficial roughening
to the surface.

When using oil-based paints,
special chemical pretreatments are
mandatory before painting —
especially if the stucco has aged
less than a year.

However, mew stucco can be
painted with top quality latex
paint containing 100 per cent
acrylic binder after only four
weeks. That’s because these paints
have alkali-resistant properties
that prevent the paint from
disintegrating.

If the stucco has been painted
before, be sure to follow these
steps: Remove rowdery dust, dirt
and other loos. material, bristie-

brush the surface, then hose down

with clean water. {f the surface is
extremely dirty, clean with @ wire
brush or light sandblasting.

If any efflorescence (a white,
crusty ard powdery material) is
present on the surface, that too
must be removed — otherwise,

these salty deposits will soon ruin
the appearance of the paint job.

Efflorescence can be removed
by sandblasting, or through
wire-brushing and scraping. Either
way, it is important to thoroughly
tinse the area with water before
attempting to paint.

On previously painted stucco,
you may find other problems:
mildew or mold, for example.
These can be removed with a
common household chlorine
bleach solution. Again, hose the
surface with clean water,

Because siucco is so porous and
has an uneven surface, it is best to
apply paint with a quality, long-
nap Q4" - 1") roller for more
complete coverage. Use some ad-
ded pressure when painting, and
work the rofler in various direc-
tions.

If you are painting old stucco
containing cracks, consider using
an elastomeric coating to help
hide the imperfections.

ting center.
