By Ken Hardie Insurance Corporation of B.C. A few weeks ago, we told you about the R-CAR_ conference which brought together experts from around the world to discuss the extent of damages different vehicles suffer in accidents and new techniques to repair those vehicles. On Sept. 12, the group witness- ed a crash test at ICBC's Research and Training Centre which tested the strength of a metal fender repaired using a high-tech glue rather than the normal bonding system. The vehicle was pulled tail-first into a concrete barrier at 50 km/h and, to the delegates’ satisfaction, the repaired fender crumpled in the normal, controll- ed fashion needed to absorb energy from the crash and better safeguard the occupants. kat Reports are coming in from RCMP detachments around the province with results of the recent INSURANCE CORPORATION OF BRETISH COLUMBIA Auto Topic speeding campaign. Although the media, ICBC and the police went all out to advertise the stepped-up enforcement activities, preliminary reports indicate thousands of tick- ets were issued. More on this next week, kek Motorists and civic officials in Kelowna were shocked earlier this week by a news report that their city has had as many traffic fatalities this year as Calgary. An urgent meeting involving the police, coroner, medical officials, ICBC and the media was held to- day to develop a coordinated ef- fort aimed at reducing the carnage in the Okanagan. ak The Vancouver Schoo! Board has proclaimed next week as School Safety Week. The idea is to promote traffic safety in the classroom to youngsters from kindergarten through Grade 7, and to motorists in school zones. ICBC, along with the Van- couver Safety Council, BC Tran- sit, BCAA and the Vancouver Police will provide teachers with special activities and demonstra- tions for the kids. All materials are supplied free of charge and are available to schools throughout the Lower Mainland. Please note that the police and the City of Vancouver Engineering Department will step up speeding and parking enforcement in school zones. aa Finally this week, congratula- tions :o MacMillan Bloedel for their outstanding safety record. The forest company’s fleet of over 500 vehicles recently qualified for an insurance refund of just over $155,000 as part of ICBC's ‘*Retro Rating’” program. The program monitors the claims record of large fleets (350 vehicles or more) and adjusts the final premium for an insurance year based on that record.
