12 - Friday, July 6, 1990 - North Shore News LIFESTYLES Check and maintain all parts of your barbecue AS SUMMERTIME draws near and we roll out the gas barbecue the following items must be checked and maintained for a safe season of outdoor cooking: The Appliance * Remove grill and burner and clean any debris which has col- lected at the bottom of the appli- ance. © Inspect the burner for deteriora- tion around the seam and holes; replace if needed. ¢ With cylinder turned off, turn control handles on and then off to ensure they operate freely. e Never use your barbecue in- doors, in an enclosed space or close to any flammable materials. © Must be approved by the Cana- dian Gas Association (CGA), Ca- nadian Standards Act (CSA) or the Underwriters’ Laboratories of Canada (ULC). The Regulator, Hose and Con- nections © Are examined for cracks, leaks, wear, or burn marks. © The connector to the tank must be examined for damaged threads and worn O-ring. The Cylinder * Tanks should not be dented, damaged or corroded. *® Check for the date stamped on the tank (usually the collar). After ten (10) years from the date, the tank must be replaced or serviced by your propane dealer. © Screw connector onto tank firm- ly; remember the connector has left-hand threads. © Open cylinder valve fully, test the connections for tightness with soapy water. If bubbles appear, close cylinder valve and check connector ‘or damaged threads or worn O-ring. © A soap test should be conducted following each cylinder refill or cylinder replacement.
