This was the challenge that recently earned some Seycove Sec- ondary students a gold medal at the 12th Annual UBC Physics Olympics. The five Grade 12 physics stu- dents, Mike Sears, Ed Deary, Ross Joughin, Elliott Cherneski, Tonis Tutti and Leif Bartholsen, used their knowledge of physics and powers of improvisation to take on several of the challenges that were put to more than 80 such teams from across B.C. “It was inspiring to watch all of these brilliant kids working to complete their tasks,'’ said Seycove Principal Larry Brown, who attended the Olympics. Each team had to try their hands at each challenge, using a package of odd materials that were not designed to aid in facilitating a solution. “We've competed before, but never done this well,”’ says Brown. The team’s staff sponsor was John Dawson. The Physics Olympics are orga- nized by the mathematics and physics departments at UBC.
