SWSHE 11 - Wednesday, February 8, 1989 - North Shore News Library celebrates bibliophiles EVERY MONTH is book month at North Vancouver District libraries, but this year February is dedicated to aspects of book-lore other than reading: the creative process, book collecting, book binding and book censorship. On Thursday, Feb. 9 at 7:30 p.m., award-winning novelist 1.R. Wright will be at the Capilano Library, 3045 Highland Blvd., to talk about her work. Wright writes in two genres: mainstream novels of modern rela- tionships, and mysteries. Her first murder story, The Suspect, which was set on the Sechelt Peninsula, won the Edgar Award of the Mystery Writers of America. In her latest novel, Love in a Temperate Zone, Wright explores the effects of changing cir- cumstances on interpersonal rela- tionships. Lynn Valley Library’s guest in February will be Guy Robertson, a library systems analyst who is also an expert in the art of book collec- ting. Robertson’s lecture, which is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 21, will discuss the history of book production including some examples of once-censored titles, and the development of a book collection both as a personal inter- est and as an investment. There will be time for questions. The talk is free, but bibliophiles are asked to come in good time as seating is limited. Exhibits at Lynn Valley during February will include a small display of books that have at some time been either banned or challenged in Canadian libraries. The list includes acclaimed authors such as Margaret Atwood, Morley Callaghan, Hugh Garner, Mark Twain and William Shakespeare. Another display will feature yet another aspect of book-lore: the art of book-binding. Still widely practised in Europe, it is almost a Jost art here. West Vancouver’s Tanya Bolenz studied the craft for three years in West Germany, where appren- ticeship is still possible. Her skills include sewing the pages, tooling the spines and making the covers, which may be of leather, linen or parchment. She has also created some of her own endpapers in one-of-a-kind designs. Her work will be on display at Lynn Valley from Feb. 21 to March 14. Until Feb. 18, the display case will feature artwork, carvings and fabrics from Africa to celebrate Black History Month in Canada. The exhibit is coordinated by the Vancouver chapter of the Congress of Black Women in Canada, who are making a major effort this year to raise awareness of black history on the West Coast of Canada.
