The Open For Life campaign, already in place in many B.C. communities, involves the public distribu- tion of envelopes designed as a quick reference source for family medical history and medications informa- tion for emergency personnel responding to those in need of medical care. “We want to sec these envelopes in every North Shore houschold,”” said Provincial “mbulance Service West Vancouver unit chief Wayne — caith. Galbraith is coordinating the North Shore campaign effort. ‘The envelopes simplify our calls. We have all the information we need and can quickly pass it on to the hospital,”" he said. The user simply fills out the medical information sheet, leaves the envelope taped inside the refrigerator, puts an identifying sticker on the fridge and a sticker on the front door. Donors who help fund the medical information kit will receive mention on the envelope. For more information call Galbraith at 925-1331. The Department's salmon enhancement and conservation prograins are achieving an excellent record of success. Through responsible management and effective conservation techniques, these prized fish will continue to be a great resource for B.C’s future. in the lower Georgia Strait, however, the chinook stocks have continued to decline. The Gulf chinook is more than: a magnificent fish: it is a symbol of the kind of life British Columbians enjoy. It is a part of the province's identity and history, To preserve runs of salmon from lower Georgia Strait rivers in- cluding the Squamish, Cowichan and Nanaimo, the Department has developed a special, intensive plan for conserva- tion and enhancement. It is a plan that will-and must-work. The Gulf chinook needs special protection to survive into the 1990s. Of all salmon stocks, the chinook from lower Georgia Strait are most vutner- able to over-fishing. Almost all of these chinook remain in the Strait, rather than migrating to the relative safety of the open Pacific. This means the Gud/chinook can be caught year-round - throughout its life cycle. Enhancement and conservation pro- grams that have worked so effectively to build up other species have proven insuf- - ficient to protect these chinook. Over the last ten years, the number of chinook caught in the Strait has declined by 75%, to approximately 160,000 fish last year, with only an estimated 4,300 Gulf chinook escaping to spawn in 1987. Without immediate, effective action, wild stock of chinook from rivers in lower Georgia Strait will decline below ‘The Chinool : -Oncorbynchus ishawylscha: Ocee .
