And if the weekend's games are indicative of what is in store, the series will be a hard-hitting and entertaining see-saw serics. At the Winter Club Feb. 13, Sean Morrison’s short-handed goal 18 minutes into the third period, knotting the score at 5-5, was the first of a three-goal splurge by the locals in a two-minute span that sparked the Flames to a 7-5 win over the Steelers. Dan Payne notched the game winner, his second goal of the night, while Andrew Merilees add- ed an empty net goal at the 19:55 mark as the Steelers went with six attackers in their bid for a tie. GOALS MADE The Steelers opened the scoring four minutes into the game, but midway through the period the Flames countered with three quick goals. Justin George scored on the power play from Dave Port and Jeff Lee at 9:58, then Ken Savage from Kevin Buhr and Lee at 10:59, followed by Payne on the power play from Steve Harris and Port at 12:20 to take a 3-1 lead. The Steelers closed out the scor- ing with three minutes remaining in the period to make it 3-2 after one. Grandview outscored the Flames 2-1 in the second frame, with George picking up his second goal of the night scoring on the power play from Bryan Markert and Lee for a 4-4 deadlock heading into the third period. The Steelers took a 5-4 lead with a power-play goal 8:34 into the final frame. And while Grandview dominated play for much of the period and outshot the Flames 21-11, goaltender Gary Knight came up with key saves to keep the game within reach for his team. Port made his mark as top playmaker in the game, drawing assists on five of the Flames’ six goals. TABLES TURN But at Grandview Feb. 14, the tables were turned as the Flames saw a 3-1 first period lead dissolve into a 6-5 loss. The Steelers opened the scoring just 30 seconds into the frame, but before the period ended the Flames had replied with three unanswered goals — Payne from Savage and George at 7:48, Harris from George at 12:39 and then George from Kelly Lawrence and Savage 45 seconds later to put the Flames up 3-1 after one. But it would be the last time the Flames would enjoy the lead.
