Mailbox Collins’ journalism ‘biased’ Dear Editor: At the risk of granting Mr. Doug Collins more attention than he deserves, we should take into consideration the dubious service he offers readers of the North Shore News. Where else could we find such superbly crafted examples of bias- ed opinion couched in such ex- quisitely slanted language? As a teacher of English, [ at- tempt to educate my students to recognize subjectivity in writing and evaluate it according to merit. It must be admitted that without the contributions of Mr. Collins, young students of writing . (and some not so young) would be hard pressed to find definitive examples of biased journalism with which to compare the more desirable form of writing expected of a good newspaper. Mr. Collins does in fact, give us many and frequent hints that he does not take himself as seriously as his more naive readers do. Moreover, while it is the obligation of the individual to recognize the right of any writer to express his opinions (biased or otherwise), it is a greater obligation that the indi- vidual be responsible for learning the difference between personal diatribe and factual, objective commentary. One last point: after reading several of Mr. Collins’ recent col- umns, as well as the comments of readers who would deny his right to publish them, | could not help but wonder if the North Shore News isn’t getting the last laugh anyway. After all, any paper which presents a young lady (Sunshine Gir}, March 1), whose highest aspiration is to advance from mud to Jello wrestling can hardly expect its readers to take much of ifs con- tents seriously, now can it? Well, thanks for the anyhow, North Shore News, Susan Cohen North Vancouver laughs COMBINED" PARTS & SERVICE On the Narth Shore unce 1955, PARTS & SERVICE FOR MAJOR APPLIANCES Parts Dept. open 9:00 to 5:30 Mon. to Fri, Sat 9 to 5 Major appliance in-home service Is as near as your phone. 1629 Garden Ave., North Vancouver 987-2251 Vacuum cleaner parts or bring your cleaner in for servicing.
