'V illegal suites issue requires consideration Dear Editor: At first blush, you wouldn't think 50 neighborly" complaints over illegal suites in North Vancouver District would be something to get excited about. But, a sensitive district mayor and council would be aware of the potential political event 50 family evic- tions would become if the threatened families exercis- ed the minimum organization required to turn the sit- uation into a circus cum media event. Putting on hold the district’s legal rights to have these illegal suites emptied was probably one of the smartest things ilayor Baker and her council col- leagues did in 1986. Proposing a committee of community people to study and make recommendations on the offended bylaw was probably another bit of enlightened wisdom, If the good mayor and council's perceived wisdom gets off on the right foot for 1987 their bylaw study committee will be given a broad enough man- date to look below the surface of this iceberg’s tip. When we consider the ongoing dynamics of the North Shore in general; a significant increase in illegal suite complaints between 1985 and 1986 should, and I think has, sent a clear message to the district mayor Dear Editor: and council. Given the growing multicultural face of the district and her two neighboring communities a halt and look-see proposition will very likely cause us all to save some grief and possible embarrassment. Current economic and market pressure on our ex- isting housing stock is nothing more than a signal of the coming growth and changes, and should be dealt with swiftly and with long-term planning. If Baker and council’s committee is composed of fair, sensible and sensitive people with some idea of how the area’s residential growth is and will continue to take place, then some sense of what kind of present and future controls or regulations will be brought forward in their final recommendations. The district's leadership is needed and should be encouraged at this tire. Let’s hope Mayors Lanskail, Loucks and their respective councils witl watch, listen and learn from this the district’s opportunity to show the kind of leadership that will mark our communities as well-lead and well-planned ones. Africa comparison ‘ignorant’ Dear Editor: Praising Premier Vander Zalm for his attitude towards South Africa (Dec. 26), Mr. Frank Ber- nard says that the world is ignoring more horrible situations (than in South Africa), among others in Poland. May I ask Mr. Bernard where he obtained that false information? In the past year and a half in South Africa well over 1,000 people were killed by the police force, un- punished. Not one person was Kkill- ed in Poland on government orders in that same time. Blanket censorship of reporters and access to and reporting on po- litical disturbances is unknown in Poland. Also the average Polish citizen has access to full education; his freedom of speech and move- ment through the country is unhindered. The general standard of living is much higher than that of the average South African - so where is the horror? lf Mr. Bernard wants to com- pare the horrors in different coun- tries I suggest he has a look into the yearly report of the London- based Amnesty International, probably the best source of infor- mation on the subject; this would help him to avoid expressing such strikingly ignorant opinions as the one mentioned above. If that is too difficult, I suggest he read a newspaper from time to time, especially the foreign news section in which he seems to be in- terested. : Alexander Kadulski North Vancouver Classifieds Sell 986-6222 "IMPAIRED DRIVING & PERSONAL INJURY CLAIMS Kenneth J.
