But when we were made us feel sick. it was a confiscated television clip shown to our party by the South African Information Bureau, an organization that hostile critics would describe as a propaganda ministry. But SAIB didn’t seem to be very heavy on | propaganda. If it were, it would give world-wide circulation to what Jam about to describe. The item showed the agony and death of a black woman at the hands of a berserk black mob, her crime having been that she had become engaged to a black policeman. In war, I have seen men blown to bits and others dragging their entrails around on the ground, but neither in peace nor war have f seen anything like that mob in action. In five long minutes the defenceless young woman was kicked and beaten into an unrecognizable mass of twitching human meat. A couple of brave fellows then dropped a huge rock on her and she was still. Two women in our press party said later they didn't see that bit because they had shut their eyes. Such things happen all over Black Africa. But in South Africa they are backed by the banned, red-led African National Congress (ANC), which Western politicians see as some sort of Open 7 Days A Week, Mon. -Wed. 9am- 7 pm, Thurs. Fri. 9 am-9 pm, Weekends and Ho there we saw something that Boy Scout troop. Churchmen also make friendly noises about it, Let us forgive them. In Christ’s words, they know not what they do. Former Archbishop Ted Scott, one of our own men of God, is keen on the ANC. And if he has ever criticized it [ must have been out. The murder of the woman was not an isolated case. There have been hundreds of such deaths, including the infamous necklac- ings — death by gasoline-soaked burning tire — fashionable with the ‘‘comrades’’, whom the ANC also cheer on. A black 16 year old was killed that way in Soweto the day be- fore I visited it, his offence hav- ing been that he sat his school ‘matric’. For the ANC, any improvements for blacks not governed by them is retreat, In true Lenin style, power must come through chaos. Via sanctions, wittingly or un- wittingly, Western liberals subscribe to the same policy. Mr. Gorbachev loves it all, of course. His strategy is to isolate South Africa internationally and then move in. The failure of the Western media to expose the ANC is as- tounding. Some weeks ago, CBC-TV put on a program about ’ Q . Open Tuesday, November I] 9am-6p.n = the group that brought a scathing denunciation in The Washington Times from Arnold Beichman, an academic who is no friend of South Africa. The CBC, he demonstrated, had delivered a cover-up. More recently, a British TV network put on sinilar cover-up in which Archbishop Scott implied that for him, terrorist Nelson Mandela is only one step remov- ed from Jesus, ‘I have never met a human being who impressed me more,’ he said in the program. At the University of Pretoria we spent an afternoon talking to Professor M. Hough, director of the Institute for Strategic Studies. Prof. Hough had documentary evidence that the ANC is com- munist and that it is supported by the USSR. One small fact: ANC publications are printed in East Germany by the publishing house “Intecdruck"'. One despairs of Western pot- tiness, In Zimbabwe, the UK's Richard Attenborough is making & propaganda movie on Steve Biko, who died while in’ the custody of the South African Police. But no one is making a movie on the woman | saw bat- tered to death, or on all the other blacks who have been murdered, including the beauty queca who, while t was in South Africa, had her eyes gouged out and was hacked to pieces because she spoke out against violence. I hear, however, that Jane Fonda is to do a picture on the saintly Winnie Mandela, who likes necklacing and whose hus- band Brian Baloncy and Joe Clark want released from jail. And so it goes. I asked David Stewart of the Information Bureau. why he didn’t give international distribu- tion to what he showed us. If it were broadcast in South Africa, he said, it would only en- courage more killings. As for the rest of the world, no one would put ion the air. He’s right.
