UNQUESTIONABLE SUCCESS Sprinklers prevent house fire tra FIRES IN residential properties such as one and two-family dwell- ings, apartments, dormitories and mobile homes, resulted in 581 deaths in Canada in 1982 — a fig- ure that represented 86 per cent of all fire deaths in the country that year. Of the 581 fatalities, 406 occur- red in one and two-family homes. Statistically, then, residential fires pose the greatest potential for death or injury. National Research Council Canada suggests that one method by which this potential might be reduced is the use of sprinkler systems. SPRINKLER SUCCESS Sprinkler systems have been us- ed in non-residential properties for more than a century and for the protection of property, they have been unquestionably successful. Traditionai sprinkler systems have not been totally effective, however, in preventing joss of life in the room of fire origin in resi- dential occupancies because of slow response time. The development of a fast- response sprinkler has, therefore, greatly increased the life-saving potential of sprinkler systems in residential occupancies.
