dining now. Wednesday, December 1S. 1990 -- North Shore News - 31 Cafe breakfasts pricier but still a good deal From page 30 Especially when they arrive with a full family contingent, and especially when the younger members of that contingent are still suffering the ill effects of a morning cartoon jag. And most upscale restaurants that serve breakfast are still recov- ering from the night before at 9 a.m. So the possibilities for culinary catastrophies abound. Which is probably why most restaurants don’t serve breakfast. But I'll bet a lot of folk would applaud the efforts of more restau- rants to enter the breakfast arena with their best gastronomic gladia- tors. Breakfast can be such a civilized meal. For one thing, restaurant breakfasts are something mest people indulge in only while they are en vacation: for another it is such a nice time of the day to be waited on. Cafe Boulevard is one of the few independent, full-service restau- rants on the North Shore to offer a breakfast menu that is more than the traditional two-eggs-any-style and schooners-of-coffee fare. Table Hopping last sampled the restaurant's wares early last year, soon after it opened. The Boulevard changed hands Bue to our tremendous Pre-G.ST. New Car inventoried with trade-ins. The Boulevard’s current morn- ing menu is simpler than its origi- nal version. For some the change means a loss of pre-noon flam- bovance; for others it will mean a dispatching of marning pretension. Prices are higher than they were, but breakfast menu selection re- mains interesting. An English Grill (now $7.95; $6.25 back in ’89) continues to be a breakfast to be reckoned with: two eggs (any way you like ‘em)} served with ham, bacon, twa sausages, grilled tomatoes, pan- fried potatoes and fresh mushrooms. The meal also comes with four pieces of granary bread toast, a dish of strawberry jam and a gar- nish of honeydew and cantalouve melon. It's an all-day breakfast for most people. And for the more adven- turesome, the Boulevard still offers such breakfast entrees as Bratwurst ($7.95) which comes with two eggs, sauerkraut, pan-fried potatoes and toast, and Eggs Laredo Model, fully equipped. #907103 WAS $13,985 pre-Gsir. The selection comes with eggs beneath a mild red tomato salsa, lashings of sour cream and a half avocado crown. It’s colorful, lively, and very gocd. A sampled French Toast ($6.50 now: $4.95 way back when) in- cluded four slices of sourdough bread topped with slices of banana and accompanied with a dish of maple syrup. The bread slices were smalier and thinner than those served on last year’s Table Hopping visit, but the plate had a colortul presenta- tion and the toast was consumed with much enthusiasm. The interior of Cafe Boulevard retains the myriad black and white ar.d color photos of movie and television stars installed by its orig- inal owners, and the restaurant has been around long enough now to have cultivated a regular clientele and a good neighborly at- mosphere, But elsewhere some signs of wear are showing and some of the restaurant’s original polish has faded: Crockery bears the chips and scratches of a thousand breakfasts, lunches and dinners.
