16 - Wedaesday, March 27, 1985 - North Shore News ing power to traffic lights at Westview and the Upper Levels. Wild weekend By JOANNE MacDONALD NORTH SHORE residents were left without power and forced to contend with fall- ing branches and trees when gale force winds struck most of the Lower Mainland Saturday. B.C. Hydra spokesman Peter McMillait said between 1,000 and 1,500 customers were affected by the. wind conditions on the North Shore Saturday with the ma- jority of the residents ex- periencing power ottages located west of Lonsdale. He said two feeder circuits from the Capilano sub-sta- tion were out of commis- sion, with one down for about two hours and the other out of service for - slightly less than two hours, He said: other mishaps oc- curring on the North Shore were attributed to falling trees or branches. An Environment Canada spokesman said winds peak- ed at speeds of 42 knots or 78 kilometres per hour at Vancouver International Airport Saturday. He said a storm occurring on the nor- thern part of Vancouver Island created a deep, low pressure area which moved onto the coastal area, leading to the high winds. The spokesman said con- ditions were most severe along the coastal or exposed - areas, adding the winds tended to decrease as they moved inland by about 15 to 20 per cent. McMillan said Hydro fac- ed trouble calls from af- fected customers from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Repairs were completed on the North Shore by the evening. No injuries were reported, however, police were kept busy directing traffic at the intersection of Westview and the Upper Levels when a tree fell on lines controlling the intersection’s traffic lights.
