NEW YEAR'S Day madness wasn't confined to the snowy
beaches of English Bay for while fhe polar bear swim was
taking place, Deep Cove was markiag its own cite of pussage
into a new year.
The event wes the third annual Pexguin Plunge and while
a crowd of several hundred in toques, boots and winter coats
watched from the shore and from boats just off the beach,
slightly more than a score of entrants stripped to their
swimming suits and headed for tae bracing waters of Indian
Arm,
For most of those on hand the Penguin Plunge was just
that — a quick dash down the snow-covered beach, into the
water up to their necks and then back out to waiting towels
and coffee cups.
A handfu: of those who showed up turned the event into
an endurance contest, though, with one man yoing for a
leisurely 200 yard m in the iey waters before returning to & es : ahs : SE so ane i
