SEN. BOYS BASKETBALL Top teams clash WV 65 Dukes 60 TWO NORTH SHORE senior boys’ basketball teams ranked in the group of top ten in the Province in ‘AA’ competition as of January 11. Tom Rip- pon’s West Vancouver Highlanders are ninth in the province followed by Phil Langley’s Wind- sor Dukes in number 10 position. In the past week these two highly regarded teams met for the first time in league competition at West Van- couver. The highly touted By KEN SHERK Windsor Dukes were favoured to take the contest, but excellent team work and strong defense were major factors in the Highlanders bid to beat the odds makers. Coach Tom Rippon incor- porated a 1-3-1! zone in an at- tempt to stop the Dukes big man 6’9’’ Dave Lodgins; the idea was to front and trap Lodgins from behind forcing him away from the play and off the boards. The first quarter ended in a 1-14 score which showed Lodgins ability to shoot from the outside if forced out of the middle. The second quarter saw hectic Snowmobiles chew up trails SNOWMOBILERS ARE. chewing up the cross country ski trails at Hemlock Valley and the folk who operate and maintain the facility are cut up about it. The half came to a close as both teams battled for the lead only to end up tied at 34-34. In the second haif of the game the Dukes were able to shut down Termansen who had been outstanding in the second quarter; however the patience of the offence, fine shooting of West Van guard Tony Martino, and ag- gressive play by 6’5’’ Rob Pearson against Lodgins enabled the Highlanders to maintain a slim four to five point margin during the fourth quarter until the final minutes of play. The Dukes down 63-60 with less than a minute remaining on the clock had possession of the ball, the team worked for a good shot only to come away empty handed as Highlander center Rob Pearson hauled down the rebound with 35 seconds left on the clock. In an attempt to regain posses- sion of the ball the Dukes fouled hoping to force the Highlanders to the line. On the first foul Coach Tom Rippon chose to inbounds the ball versus going to the foul line. Once the ball was inbounded the Dukes this time intentionally fouled Jason Bueler who went to the line and solidified the lead by increasing the margin to five points with no time left on the clock for a final score of DEADLINE New Display Advertising Deadlines now in effect. Heading for top 10 2 _____ FROM PAGE B1 competitors. Crowson’s goal this time around is to crack the top 10. “‘If we do that we’ll be very, very happy,’’ he says. Going on past experience, the North Shore native knows he’ll have his work cut out for him. ‘‘The Norwegians and the Finns are just unbelievable,’’ he says. ‘*Their whole system is set up differently. The Norwegians train (as a team) for six weeks before the competition.”’ As well, cross country ski- ing is a much more popular sport in Europe so most of their blind skiers have been at it since they were small children. In spite of this, Jacobsen is optimistic about -Crowson’s chances. ‘‘Physically, he’s as fit as he can be. I would think he should be anywhere in the top 10.”" And what is Crowson’s next goal, after the worlds? **Take some time off,’’ he laughs. ‘‘At least a year. Ski for fun and enjoy my * family.”’ Become a British Columbia's eK Friend of Children’s Hospital COME ALIVE — COME AND DRIVE MAJOR MOTION FROM NISSAN AWESOME S002X ron’ 4 TOUCHE PAS TERE MAC OHAE bats THE NEW AEE (> Cob NE 1OK4: Wirnettie: you. clmanse AAG cn aa, Cats cog Ebert der ghar tbe Tears creesmrcont Lb coamederd) toe Outside The dramatically restyled 300ZX tor 1984 is awesome a totally new look with a new swerodynamic shape Inside the ultimate 3007 the GL and GLL Turbo anew electrome Cockpit feeds you information Digitally your DOdy 4 ways naw sor aptne ally Auchidly The jealhe: driver 5 seat adjusis to You afte on control Nissan s radical S$ outte VO wilh awesome teally means Malch it with av five speed and see available Turbo shows you wnat O lo 100 km/h go by in 7! seccnds tat - 815,279 “LEASE FROM $350 PER MONTH FOR 36 MONTHS (PLUS TAX) »>ROONS EVE SSAN Eonscate Che Rb bob sey oaths cot oui Aideate ade Thre faedt oe Obeigagverd for cee you | be driving Mayor Motar trom NISSAN $6549 LEASE FROM $168 PER MONTH FOR 36 MONTHS (PLUS TAX) “ALL MAKE LEASING AVAILABLE 985-9311 NORTHSHORE 1160 MARINE DR.
