Sherri Stinson-Coulthard of North Vancouver, Brenda Hughes of West Vancouver and Debra Frank of Van- couver have three things in common. They cach have an cye for fashion wich they can trans- late info cxquisite creations, they cach took to sewing on their own with the invaluabic assistance of their mothers, and they cach graduated from Helen Lafcau's School of Fashion Design where they met. But there che similarities end. Marned at 18 with two kids soon after, Sherri now 30, worked as an altcrationist at a drycicancrs in Michigan. By BARRETT FISHER She didn’t have any papers, so took what work she could, and fortunately the ex- perience came in handy. Many years later, Sherri recognized her flair for fashion through sewing for friends and decided to take a fashion merchandizing course through Blanche McDonald and the Lafeaux designing course. Debra, now 32, worked as a secretary, but felt her ““creative self was stifled’’, and the job was‘‘a burnout It was a big decision for me to quit my job,’’ she says, ‘*because | would either make it or break 1."’ Fortunately, she seems to have all the potential for making it, and 1s glad she made the fashion move Twenty thre year old Brenda got involved in faece m 9100 reg vue $20” aN tithe a 1 smd ov Alhrwam © btumaqrarna 960 ‘oy 1 Sou 1349" Vy -a A darliresstendt Veoer (weer Va 1 ay@way aeevtn C Merete fashion designing through her mother’s sewing work- shop, Karita, in West Van- couver. ‘‘l was unemployed and depressed, and needed a job.’’ So helping her mom, who naturally was a great in- fluence, got her career going. Also she took the Blanche McDonald fashion merchan- dising course and design course, and worked for Cydney Mar, designing and manufacturing, making patterns. Brenda now works on her designs and has an area in her mother’s shop where she displays them. Debra and Sherr will soon be opening a shop of thei own just off Lonsdale at 29th wn North Vancouver, which they are calling Take Me to Your Leader “H's just a lute cottage and we'll buy some industrial sewing machines and go gung-ho."’ Sherri waitresses at Peppi’s, where she probably had some pretty good con- nections to get their fashion show featured, and an im- pressive show it was. The variety of the three designers’ show included lots of wools and tweeds in coats, jackets, pants and skirts by Debra, silk dresses, leather pants and sweaters by Sherri and lots of evening wear and dresses and coats by Brenda. The ladies each have their preferences, and Brenda says she prefers working with red, but adds, ‘‘I’m so broke, I'll buy whatever material | can afford.’’ Debra on the other hand swears by black, and Shern likes everything, but especial- ly blues, purples and black. Debra likes the slim long look and her fashions reflect this in thew straight, clean lines and loose styles. One of CONTINUED ON PAGE C5 _ ALBEE’S SEWING CENTRE AL pet Pee dh Pay x DEAR SANTA.
