CALGARY (UPC) - As
Nelson Skalbania cxplains
what his new hockcy team is
supposed to accomplish,
some people listen and secm
to understand. Others shake
their head in confusion.

Skalbania, a fast moving
Vancouver recall estate
millionaire Tuesday an-
nounced he has sold a 49 per
cent interest in the former
Atlanta Flames NHL
franchise to a group of local
businessmen. He also an-
nounced the club will
continue to be named the
“Flames.”

were cager to get the
franchise moving, but
former owner Tom Cousins
has apparently backed awny
from ai chance to = join

agreement included a clause
that allowed Cousins to buy
back a 25 per cent interest in
the team within one year.
However, Skalbania said
Cousins is upset at his
proposal that the club be a
charitable concern which
donates 50 per cent of ita net
revenues to amateur hockcy
in Alberta.

“I talked to Tom ... and he
didn't seem to understand
why we are doing this charity
thing,” said Skalbania, who
repeatedly spoke in phrases
too colorful to print. ~

“I doubt that he (Cousins)
will be interested in the club
... If the United Way comes
to sce me this year,”
Skalbania said, “I will tell
them I already gave in a big
way.”

The Vancouver realtor
has vowed that 50 per cent of
the revenues up [6 $1 million
will go to the Canadian
Olympic hockey team which
is hcadquartcred in Calgary.
After that, moncy will go to
to other forms of amateur
hockey.

The new partners in the
Flames included the Scaman
brothers Darryl and
Butch — of Calgary. The
Seamans had been the major
bidders for the tcam until
Skalbania topped their offer
late last month.

Calgarians searched hard
to find a name for their new
NHL franchise but in the
end, names like “Calgary
Yahoos,” “Calgary
Buckaboos” or “Calgary
Cuckoos” were just no
substitute for “Calgary

Flames” — the name the
club had in Adlanta.

But there were some
novel, cven puzzling catrics.
At least six fans wanted the
team called the Calgary
Buckaboos, a few others
liked Calgary Rosebuds, two
voted for Calgary Brush-
busters, one chose Calgary
Bulldoggers, two voted to
call the team Calgary
Cuckoos, and two others
chose Calgary Yahoos.

But the 152 who voted for
retaining the old name
prevailed. A close second,
with 95 votes, was “Calgary
Chinooks” —- the name for
the warm mountain wind
that wafts from the Rockics
during the winter, drama-
tically raising (tcmpcratures.

Votes also went to Calgary
Arabian Knights, Calgary
Beavers, Blacktacks, Bush-
wackers, Black Golders,
Calbertans, Claws, Fire
Eaters, Hillbdillica, Prairie
Dogs, Locomotives, Silver
City Boys, Super Stamps and
Thunderbirds.

Onc person wanted to call
the team the Calgary Um-
brellas.
