When peopie speak of our Victoria as the “Garden City”, her sister- city should be Adelaide. trayel- wise by Barbara McCreadie When, and if, Brian and | ever retire, this could well be the place where we would escape the Arctic chill of Canadian winter to rent a spot near the ocean and relax for a few months. From the multitude of beach apartments it is a '41- hour tram ride into the centre of town The tram tracks parallel the famous Anzac highway and the nde is cheap -— about 65¢ (Canadian) will get) you there, and provding you return within two hours. the same Uchet will get you back 1 prowled a bit) on the beach and picked up shells by the ‘pound Exquisite! ['ve never seen such a city of manicured gardens, tidy houses and clean streets. Littering will earn you a $20 fine but, by the looks of things, they never have to enforce the legislation. Adelaide was planned in 1840 by Col. William Light, who also planned Penang. With the peculiar genius known to eccentrics, he planned wide streets, able to cope with modern traffic and a perfect square of a city. The boundaries are ten miles — im each direction — with the streets laid-out in geometric precision. Brush fencing is used in many areas — and the term “ugly as a brush fence’ certainly applies. What awful stuff! It is even used for ceiling decor in some better restaurants and has to be a helluva fire hazard. Can you believe that it costs $12 (Aust.) a FOOT? Downtown Adelaide has scores of specialty shops and restaurants, food and en- tertainment mostly centered around Hindley Street. Look for the “Downtown Leisure Center” uf you are travelling with kids. The whole complex is carefully guarded by teams of security police so you don’t have to worry about their safety. A good meal on Hindley St. will cost about $20 for two. Remember, Australian wine is good and CHEAP. There are lots of B.Y.O. Grog spots so you can arrive with either your “Esky” (cooler. complete with booze, ice, glasses) or a bottle or two of wine under your arm. Leon's Wine Bar. about a mile from the city center is a favorite of locals as is “Henry Ayers”, alleged to be the best seafood spot in Adelaide. Leon's won't cost more than $20 a couple but expect more at “Henry's”. I enjoyed one of the best meals of my life at a spot called “The Grapevine”. This place ts built around an elderly grapevine, sall producing heavy, sweet wine grapes. You can pick some if it’s all With our Bonanza Account. you wish but by the time we dined at the “Grapevine” the harvest was nearly over and the one I ate was fermented to that stage between port and raisin. The Grapevine isn't cheap and the decor is a_ cross between 1950's kitch and my kid's early fingerpainting. We decided that the proprietors hag hired their wives to do the decor to save decorating fees. Pity. For openers, the Pate at $3.90 is excellent. I could kick myself for not ordering an appetizer because the avocado Belmare looked good enough to frame (seafood, mostly shrimp, in a sauce and presented in a huge ripe avocado). I watched a friend deal with ten rock oysters, helped him eat two of them, and couldn't believe my _ ears when he ordered ten more! At $4.60 a plate, that’s expensive taste. I ordered Barbequed Prawns Greek Style (raw prawns, marinated in herbs and lemon and barbequed on HH JunvannesnnendeaeanaueeeeecueeeeeUeediMTeeeesecetTeeeHtaiet a grill). Fantastic! I think that they were still wiggling when they hit the fire. The same guy who ate the 18 oysters ordered scallops done the same way. I was so busy attacking my shrimps that I didn’t get a chance to steal any of the scallops but they were gobbled-up so fast that I'd probably have lost two fingers! Some of our party ordered the Paviova — a dessert made of egg white, whipped cream and strawberries. It was described by par- ticipants as “an erotic ex- perience”. I believe! At $1.80, a bargain. To stuff yourself, right through the entire menu, including wine. allow $20 per person. Don't plan on anything strenuous for the rest of the day. Next day, we took a tnp to the Barossa Valley. | distinguished myself early- on by explaining that my first taste of wine was “Barossa Pearl". To a chorus of “Yetch'” from our Australian fnends I was told that it is the Australian equivalent of “Baby Duck”. There are three ways to vist the Barossa Valley (about 25 miles from Adelaide). Tours from your hotel are provided at a reasonable cost. Local buses head in that diréétion, but since the wineries are located miles apart you just might find yourself hitch- hiking. Renting a car isn't cheap — figure $30 (Canadian) plus gas and mileage. You can sample the wares for free, as you can in wine distncts of southern California.
