‘ Some months ago I wrote a column dealing with the subject of ghosts-in- photographs from Gladys Merlier in Pennsylvania. That article generated a lot of interest and response and helped at least one family come to terms with their own inexplicable’ _ photograph. _ " Page 26, March 7, 1979 - North Shore News our mysterious world _ . by George C unningham-Tee | . painful of my entire life.’’ Harry writes in his book ‘I Sold myself a ._Dream’.- “Pain is the loneliest companion in the world, ‘wherever you go it goes with “Two days after the article appeared, I received a call from a Mr. Henig, a retired businessman and now a writer with two autobio- graphica} books to his credit. He called to say that he too had a photograph which contained an image which shouldn’t have been there. He was relieved to learn that he wasn’t the only one to have a picture of this kind. and consequently was happy to tell me about it and the circumstances surrounding its being taken. Harry Henig is one of those success stories that abound in North America. . poor Jewish boy coming from Europe,: poverty, struggles, hopes and dreams, and finally success. On coming to this country, he worked long hard hours for a farmer-uncle, virtually a slave to the chores and. demands of that existence. - Eventually he ‘escaped’ the farm and went to New York. It was a tough time there too, not only for Harry but for thousands of others during the depression era. > Then he moved to Winnipeg in the early 1930's, still struggling and poor. From 1932 to 1935 he and Fanny lived in an upstairs one-room ‘apart- ment’ with shared toilet, in a house that always seemed cold and damp, with never enough money available for food and other necessaries to relieve the harshness of those desperate years. But the two had each other and love and _ friendship sustained them — they had promised to respect and obcy éach other in sickness and in health, in poverty or = in plenty. The poverty was then, the plenty came later. . and the sickness of his wife followed that. “The years 1973 and 19/4 were the most traumatic and married and you. The 23rd of June, 1973, was the day when all miracles, all faint hopes and expectations came to an end — my wife passed away . . only the echoes of the past remained.” . After a long period of depression, Harry turned to writing, finding an escape and some relief from the emotional pain of the loss. In preparing his second book, Harry returned to Winnipeg and with a photo- grapher visited the house on Manitoba Avenue where he and his ‘heart’s companion’ had spent those hard years. The house is now spruced up with pleasant trees and a white picket fence surround- ing it. harry posed against the familiar gate post. At first glance it's an ordinary snap-shot, slightly — over- exposed .in the “strong sun- light. So ordinary in fact that it was quite some time before Harry took a detailed look at it — and then it was ordinary no longer. He saw a second person in the picture, framed in the upstairs window of what had been their room. " “Can. you imagine. “my surprise? I had just been in the house and knew there was no one up there — but the surprise was that I recognized the figure as that POSING OUTSIDE the Winnipeg house where he and his wife lived during the depression, . Harry’s two daughters confirmed the likeness as that of their mother but after discussion, they dissuaded him from making any mention of the inexplicable figure. When they read the article I mentioned, they changed their minds and decided to tell me about it. . .and gave me permission to tell you also. The second photo shows Harry and Fanny with one of their daughters in happier times and it is easy to see the similarity, both in pose’ and in the dress, with the figure in the window.
