. page 16 - April 6, 1977 - North Shore News Dear Editor: Mr. Alexander’s column in your March 18th copy com- pells me to write this letter. No doubt Mr. Alexander is an accomplished journalist, but his above mentioned article on dogs and dog behaviour was neither accur- _ate or interesting and above all it was not convincing. The heading was also erroneous, for instead of ‘‘Dog-haters strain at leash’’ it should have been ‘‘Dog-owner hat- ers etc’’ to be more to the point. A vast majority of city- dwellers own no dogs, yet they must put up with . harassment by dogs whose ‘owners prefer the easy way out of pet care. Very few | people indeed actually hate dogs or any other animals, myself for one I hate the owners of pets who make me clean up after their animal on my property. Dogs’ beneficial on one’s lawn, as Mr. Alexander claims, and turned-over garbage cans are not sanitary or a pretty sight. Growing a garden is a lot of. work even at the best of times, but it is ever so much Dear Editor: While no one would deny that the goals of our educational system should. include the development of | the skills outlined in the Core | Curriculum, the members of the B.C. Federation of Women are equally concern- ed with this government’s failure to deal with the following facts. Canadian statistics for 1972-73 show that while the enrolment rate of women in Universities has increased to a 40% level, women continue to remain concentrated in - their ‘‘traditional’’ areas, such as arts, education and nursing. We believe that women are channeled into certain educational areas and are restricted from entering others. Until the sex-role stereotyping of our children is eliminated from the educational system, our female children will be unable to exercise free choice in the development of their’ potential. The B.C. Federation of Women, therefore, makes the following recommenda- tions to the Minister of Education: 1. That he reinstate the position of Special Advisor to the Minister of Education and that her Provincial Advisory Committee on Sex Discrimination in Public Education be also reinstated. 2. That a. new set of primary text®@oks be writ- ten, based on non-sexist guidelines. 3. Payerle North Vancouver ‘Dear Editor: Although it is not my usual practice to write to news- paper editors, Iam prompted to do so by your story on page 19 of your March 30th issue, headed ‘‘Toastmasters go Bisexual’’. Presumably the toast- masters concerned have al- ready demanded a. fetrac- tion, unless of course. sey actually are all hermap dites. This would certainly be world news if it is indeed the - case. If, however, it is simply an example of someone using a word without being aware of its meaning, then this would indicate to me _ that some of your staff at any rate ‘would be well advised to invest in a dictionary. This brings me to the second point of my letter; perhaps some thought could be given to instituting a weekly contest with an award to the reader who assembles the greatest number of spelling mistakes and/or typographical errors in ‘each issue of your paper, One example which, springs to mind... in the classified “section 1 have on many; many occasions seen ‘‘Volks- wagen”’ spelled. ‘‘Volks- wagon’. This for perhaps the most populous car on the r oads today. Another instance is an article which includes the word ‘“‘labour’’ spelled in both the Canadian and the American way, ‘‘labour’’ and ‘labor’. The C.L.C. and the various other organizations all use ‘‘labour’’ so it. would seem to be the correct method. In any event, if ‘labor’ is to be used why not use it every time? Before closing I would like to add that I admire the industry and dedication which must have been needed to make a success of the Shopper, excuse me, the News, and I hope that it will continue to prosper. It certainly is without doubt the best of the North Shore publications. David Simpson North Vancouver [The Oxferd Dictionary’s primary definition of **bisex- ual’ gives the meaning of Fitness.
