MIKE McAuley likes to keep things clean.

His Fulton Avenue yard and hedges are trim and tidy. Inside,
the house is immaculate, No dust. Everything is in its place,

Beyond his property it’s a different world in West Vancouver.

A lot of us have come to tolerate a certain level of general urban
filth. It’s a side effect of a throw-away culture.

Disposability is one of the cornerstones of our economy, We
buy into the conceit.

McAuley hasn’t bought in. ;

He is retired but one of the ways he stays active is by walking

About three weeks ago McAuley had some friends up from
Portland te visit. He was telling one of his friends about i. litter.
“He said, ‘F don’t believe that.” I said, ‘Pll show you.’ wen
five blocks and I picked up stuff and then I came across an emp:
beer carton and so I used the beer carton as a container. had this
thing full of stuff just walking around five blocks, Ie just irké in
that people are so insensitive.” a
