=. In 1897 the brothers bought out
: the Spicer Shingle Co. in Lynn
“Valley, and the Hastings Shingle
Manufacturing Co. became estab-
lished in North Vancouver. :

' He was*also.a partner in the
MeNair Fraser Lumber Co.

The home MeNair built for his
family was ‘indeed prominent and
grand, befitting the social standing
of its owner.

Built on the northwest corner of

. 6th Street. and St. Andrews, it:

commanded spectacular views of

= the harbor and the growing city of
’.. Vancouver.

It was large, with over 5,000
square feet of living space, and

had solid granite foundations ac-
companied: by granite support
pillars for the open’ porches and
entranceway.

Leaded and stained glass front
doors opened into a large foyer in
the living room and parlor on ei-
ther side.

A grand staircase of dark wood
leads to second floor bedrooms.

Other interesting elements in-
clude. the wooden floor detailing,
pillars, panelling, ornate
fireplaces, archways and high
beamed ceilings. .

Over the years the house
changed hands and various addi-
tions and architectural changes
were made to better accommodate
its use for room rentals and for a
senior care facility known as the
Four Seasons Guest Lodge.

Plans are now in the works to
restore this grand home to its
original beauty as a centrepiece to
a new project by Brady Develop-
ment Corp.

To the northwest and southwest
of the house will be constructed 58
townhouses and apartments with
an architectural! theme which
borrows from the McNair House.

There will be open courtyards,
view corridors, a small orchard,
arbors, and gazebos, beautiful old

VanDusen Garden hosts
holiday Festival of Lights

EXPERIENCE THE magic of
the VanDusen Botanical
Garden at night during the
Festival of Lights, from Friday,
Dec. 3 until Sunday, Jan. 2,
from 5 to 9:30 p.m., except
Christmas Day.

Twenty thousand lights
twinkle over five acres of
scasonal displays.

This year for the first time,
the festival is featuring ‘Music
Week" Monday Dec. 6 to
Saturday Dec. 11.

Each evening beginning at
6:30 p.m, and every half hour
until 9 p.m., there will be
community and school choirs
and musical groups performing

onstage in the central court-

Displays include a miniature
train, life-size nativity, a
dragon in the stone grotto,
shimmering lakeside walk and

for children to cuddle, so bring
your camera,

Admission rates are $7,50 for
families, $3.75 for adults and
$2 for seniors and youth;
children under six enter free.
