lished parties offer WHENEVER I walk down Marine Drive in West Van I try to avert my eyes as I pass Mary Collins’ campaign head- quarters. For there i see Kim Campbell throwing those big eyeballs at me. Plus Collins wearing that sugary smile. To lock at the pair you would never think they are offering us more of everything that has put us off our feed these past few years. Collins is a party gal, pure and simple. And I don’t mean parties that entertain. In nine years, Brian Baloney gave us more blarney than was ever heard in Blarney itself and she never once raised her voice in audible protest. Collins and Campbell nodded their heads happily when the GST raid on our wallets took place, ‘even though we had never been asked about it. As usual. — | Collins nodded her head again when that billion-dollar contract for CF-18 fighter jets was whip- ped out from under the nose of the Winnipeggers and given to Montreal. . And wasn’t it all smiles and ‘caviar when Big Torydom came to North Van and promised work . would begin on that icebreaker at our local shipyard? And isn’t that shipyard now a desert? We can expect more of the same -if Collins gets sent back to Ottawa under a Tory government... Come to think, of it, we can cx- pect more of the same if she’s sent back under a Liberal government, the Tories and Liberals being cut from the same cloth. The Tories, Liberals and NDP ’ think they know what’s best for.us -. and that it’s best for us to play no part in what they do. Collins ON THE OTHER HAND Mention referendums to them and they break out in spots, The last time that was tried was on the Charlatan Accord. Thai little plot also got the nod from Collins and Campbell even though it would have given Quebec 25% of the seats in Parliament in perpetuity. Plus the kitchen sink. Off in left field we have Dave Barrett and Audrey McLAFFlin dancing up and down and telling us the Reform party is the most dangerous thing since the dinosaurs died. Being in the free-lunch mob they pretend we can yo on throw- ia on J BEBO) come out from under the rock “Dear Editor: I’ve never seen fit to respond to an article by Doug Collins. How- ever, after his column of Oct. 6° (“Nibbled..to death by Liberal ducks’), which . was -‘aimed at Mobina Jaffer, one of my oppo- nents in this federal election cam- paign, I thought maybe it was time to respond... So am I writing to vent outrage and frustration? No, instead | am writing to express both pity for . Collins and hope for tae future. I must pity anyone who, like Collins, lives under a rock and only ventures out once a week to’ ‘lash out paranoiacally at anything in our society which has changed in the last 40 or 50 years. It is truly sad that Collins, in his autumn years, concentrates his efforts on making the world a less: tolerant and compassionate place. I'm 27 years old, I’m running in this election because long ago I thought to myself that when I reach my autumn years, I want to be able to say that I did everything I could to make this world a better place — a more compassionate, just and tolerant place. Collins has. chosen to target IKEN BAXTER (LAWYER 124 Years Experience Mobina Jaffer on the basis of her background as a refugee from ‘Uganda, suggesting that because of this background she is not qualified to discuss the social con- - ditions that prevail in Canada. I, view this quite differently. | I think that it is a wonderful testament to this. country. that Jaffer has been able to come to this country as a refugee, avail herself of her democratic right to criticize what she sees as wrong in Canadian society, and then avail herself of the greatest democratic right of all — the right to seek public office in a democratic elec- tion. Of course, I differ with Jaffer politically. In my desire to make this world a more compassionate and tolerant place J] have chosen to run as a candidate for the New Democratic Party, a party that has always fought for social justice. It is. because | am an NDP can- didate, not in spite of it, that } stand up and declare my support for Jaffer’s right to be critical of the social conditions that prevail in Canada, and her right to run as a candidate in this election. Graeme Bowbrick North Vancouver "LONSDALE QUAY NORTH VANCOUVER 988-632] ing away moncy we don’t have. Dave didn’t spend 30 years in politics, he says, to see our social safety net wiped out by a bunch of right-wing wackos. As a double-dipper, mind you, HIS social safety net is safe enough. But about wackos. Isn't he the left-wing wacko who signed the Waffle Manifesto? And wouldn't that have made this country the People’s Republic of Canada? Campbell, meanwhile, makes noises about reducing our deadly debt but doesn’t quite know how she’s going to do it. She'll tell us later. Jean Chretien tells us to trust him, and to watch out for those Reformers, who want to pinch your pensions and maybe your pet dogs, too. The old gangs all say they want no cuts in anything that matters. But cuts are coming anyway because we are living in a fool’s paradise. The alternatives are a 40-cent dollar or stacking our money in wheelbarrows the way the Germans did in 1923. Then we have Kim Campbell's bilge that she can reduce the defi- cit without increasing taxes. Read her lips. But the deficit IS taxes. Doesn't 25% of the national budget go to paying the interest HALL: RENTAL Royal Canadian Legion #118 Seating capacity 85 people Great for wedding recep- tions, banquets, business meetings only $485 for more info call 988-3712 Never forget, either, that only lunatics would bring in nearly 253,000 immigrants a year — mostly from places like Somalia — when we have 1.6 million un- employed. That doesn’t worry North Van Tory candidate Wil! McMartin, a twit whose services 1 can do without. He’s busy running around calling anyone who wants to defend our borders a racist. No wonder he was booed at an all- candidates meeting. Trust McMartin to kiss the bums of the multicults if he gets in. You might as well vote for Mobina Jaffer. He’s not above using the ‘separatist’? smear on Reformer Ted White, either, who like a lot of other good people once sup- ported the Western Canada Con- _ cept and has never made any secret of it. Separatists? McMartin is too dim to know that the Tory caucus in Ottawa has been stuffed with Quebec-firsters and outright separatists ever since Joe Clark’s days, Look no further than Marcel Masse and Lucien Bouchard. Not so incidentally, Campbeil gave us a whopper in that TV debate when she said that 100,000 of the immigrants we are getting are “‘independents’’ and their families, an independent being a | qualified person. She should ask immigration Minister Bernard Valcourt about that. According to him, indepen- dents account for only 14% of the total. The rest are relatives or ‘‘refugees.”” To sum up: what this country needs is a damned good ‘blood, sweat and tears’’ speech. Plus ap- propriate action. But don’t look for that from Jean, Kimmie or - Audrey.
