Talks resume in BC Rail strike

THE TWO sides locked in a
bitter Jabor dispute that has
shut down the operations of
North Vancouver-based BC
Rail were scheduled to
return to the bargaining
table on Friday afternoon.

BC Rail spokesman Barrie Wall
said Labor Relations Board (LRB)
mediator Jim Breckenridge had
called the Crown corporation and
the Council of ‘Trade Unions
(CTU) to a meeting with him at 4
p.m. Friday.

The move came after Labor
Minister Moe Sihota entered the
BC Rail strike Thursday night,

Wall would not say what Sihota
had told the rail company on
Thursday night, but he said CTU
chairman Ray Callard had said his
membership was prepared to
return to the bargaining table in
an effort to end the BC Rail
strike, which entered its 33rd day
on Friday.

“Mr. Callard has said they're
willing to go back to the bargain-
ing table. We (BC Rail} never
walked away,”’ said Wall.

Callard could not be reached
for comment Friday morning.

Wall said the strike has cost BC
Rail over $30 million.

The strike has also had a severe
financial impact on several North
Shore industries.

North Vancouver’s Fibreco Ex-
port Inc., which exports wood-
chips to foreign markets, said it
has iost over $4 million because of
the strike.

The company’s Taylor, B.C.,
pulp mill was set to lay off its en-

North Vancouver-based Van-
couver Wharves L.td., which relies
on BC Rail to ship mineral con-
centrates, sulphur and potash
from northern suppliers, said it is
relying on its current stockpile of
cargo {0 meet customers’ de-
mands,

But the terminai representatives
said it 100 will be forced to cut iis
workforce if the strike is not set-
tled by mid-September, when
Vancouver Wharves’ current
stockpile of cargo is expected to
run out.

The Jabor dispute could also
hurt the operations of North
Vancouver’s two grain terminals,
Saskatchewan Wheat Pool and
Pioneer Grain Terminal Ltd.

The B.C. Grain Producers’
Association, which represents 150
grain growers in ihe Peace River
region, said the BC Rail strike has
stranded grain shipments bound
for export to Japan, China and
Russia through the Port of Van-
conver,

Association president Jim Collis
said Thursday thai grain elevators
on the BC Rail main line in Fort
St. John and Dawson Creek are
full, but stored grain cannot be
transported 10 North Shore termi-
nals,
