2 - Sunday, August 22, 1993 ~ North Shore News Talks resume in BC Rail strike THE TWO sides locked in a bitter Jabor dispute that has shut down the operations of North Vancouver-based BC Rail were scheduled to return to the bargaining table on Friday afternoon. By Surj Rattan News Reporter BC Rail spokesman Barrie Wall said Labor Relations Board (LRB) mediator Jim Breckenridge had called the Crown corporation and the Council of ‘Trade Unions (CTU) to a meeting with him at 4 p.m. Friday. The move came after Labor Minister Moe Sihota entered the BC Rail strike Thursday night, Wall would not say what Sihota had told the rail company on Thursday night, but he said CTU chairman Ray Callard had said his membership was prepared to return to the bargaining table in an effort to end the BC Rail strike, which entered its 33rd day on Friday. “Mr. Callard has said they're willing to go back to the bargain- ing table. We (BC Rail} never walked away,”’ said Wall. Callard could not be reached for comment Friday morning. The CTU, which seven different BC. Rail unions represents LABOR MINISTER Moe Sihota entered the BC Rail. strike Thursday night. and 1,600 employees, went on strike against the Crown corpora- tion on July 19. Wall said the strike has cost BC Rail over $30 million. The strike has also had a severe financial impact on several North Shore industries. North Vancouver’s Fibreco Ex- port Inc., which exports wood- chips to foreign markets, said it has iost over $4 million because of the strike. The Jabor dispute could also hurt the operations of North Vancouver’s two grain terminals, Saskatchewan Wheat Pool and Pioneer Grain Terminal Ltd. The B.C.
