Cal JOAN Wright Boyd graduated from the Vancouver School of Art in 1948. - She was an instructor there for five years, and also taught Saturday art classes and evening courses in watercolour and drawing. During her career, she made many lyrical drawings of beach grasses and the water's edge at Ambleside. She exhibited regalarly in Vancouver galleries from the late 1940s through to 1960. Like his wife, Bruce Boyd was also a graduate of the Vanccuver School of Art. He went on to earn a teaching certificate and taught at Vancouver public schocls for eight years. Boyd later went on to teach at the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr College of Art and Design), where his wife er as teacher Like B.C. Binning, the Boyds were very much involved with modern archi- tecture. Bruce Boyd coflab- orated with many architects on decorative elements in buildings throughout the ‘Lower Mainland. The cou- ple’s first house in West Vancouver was a Ron Thom design built on Sentinel Hill. To save money, the house was built with con- crete bricks and the built-in studio had clerestory win- - dows instead of skylights. . The house attracted the interest of other architects and every other day, Geoff Massey, Arthur Erickson, Bob Boal or John Wallace would come by to have a look. The Boyds’ next home was designed by Bob Boal.
