Glen Powell of the Morgan Dawne Gallery has decided on a more relaxed and varied method of displaying art. Fine art w Robert Gaister News Reporter robert@nsnews.com LOWER Lonsdale’s newest gallery features the work of more than 40 artists work- ing in a variety of mediums. Though some may say the result is a mish-mash, the husband and wife team of Glen Powell and Dawne Bringeland wanted to do just rhat: open a mixed medium gallery with an acces- sible atmosphere. However, the timing of their opening last March was not entirely their doing. “A number of good reasons notwithstanding the fact our previous location was under demolition,” said Powell. “Te’s proba- bly dust right now.” The name they settled on is a combination of names close to Powell's heart. Morgan being the name of his daughter and Dawne, his wife and business partner. “Art is something that lives and a personal name like that adds a lot of character to it,” said Powell. They have been on Esplanade since late March and Powell said the response from the community to date has been encouraging. “Whar we try to do is present art in a broader focus or realm,” said Powell. And with names like Bev Juno, Darrell Anderson, Wayne Ngan and Marina Papias ail displayed, mass GALORE AT EATON’S - PARK ROYAL SOUTH - LOCATED BEHIND THE MARKET MID-SUMMER SALE ON NOW - UP TO 50 % OFF SELECTED IN STORE SPECIALS WE ARE STAYING CPEN UNTIL CHRISTMAS FGR YOUR FALL GARDENING NEEDS LOTS OF NEW SHRUBS AND POND PLANTS HAVE JUST ARRIVED | ‘oe a ~ aor. appeal is not out of the question. While the vast majority of gal- leries tend to restrict themselves to one art form, Powell is happily busting out. “There’s almost no rule on medium,” he said. “We're bridging the gap between craft art and fine art.” Dry and clean Sina Sokhanvar, 34, is the owner of two dry cleaning outlets, one of which, Harbour View Cleaners, serves the Lower Lonsdale neigh- borhood. While he readily admits business could be better — “it could always be better” -— Sokhanvar probably knows it could also be worse. He also sees his posi- tion as a small business owner with a degree of realism often mixed with skepticism. “They tell you you don’t have a boss (as a business owner) but every customer is a boss -— you’ve got lots of bosses,” said Sokbanvar. Water world When Travis McGregor left Deep Cove, he left everything behind, including the original name of his business: the Deep Cove Dive Shop. Although he moved to his present digs on Esplanade, his new name doesn’t reflect that. Canadian Diving Centre is now closer to the Pacific Marine Training Institute which allows it to better handle joint programs. McGregor had another reason for relocating. “It just seemed like an up and coming area,” he said. $ Although he’s only 22, McGregor has ewned the shop for more than rvo years. “I was interested in diving and I was working for the shop and it was for salc,” said McGregor. “I really enjoy diving and you meet a lot of cool peopie.” Coffee culture Sunny and Jenny Lee are a sister act that help run their family- owned Java Hut Cafe. : “It’s a great place, it’s a great view,” said Sunny of her surround- ings. “The people are nice and the hours are great and on nice days ! can see all the way downtown.” While Sanny recently graduated from SFU with a history degree and is currently casting about consider- ing her options, her sister Jenny is just starting her education. She is enrolled at Capilano College and plans to transfer to UBC in the future, but in the meantime she works part-time at the Java Hut. And she has a better incentive to do so than most peo- le. “They're (family) paying for me to go to Mexico in August so I have to work here,” said Jenny.
