WELCOMING a cou-
ple of new readers to
ihe fold, whose con-
cerns have been dis-
cussed in previous
columns, affords me
the epportunity to
bang a few old traffic
tips into a few thick
skulls,

First off, one reader's con-
cerns about the infamous U-
turn.

Anyone remember the
Rockford Files? Particularly
old Jimbo’s handy way of
spinning his Firebird 180° at
fuli speed and thus foiling his
pursuers? A difficult manocu-
vre, to be sure, and certainly
fun to watch, but Mr.
Rockford’s U-turn technique
should not be considered a
safe driving habit. Duh.

A U-turn, officially called
a “Reverse Turn,” can be
executed almost anywhere if,
and only if the manoeuvre
can be made safely and with-
out interfering with other
traffic; if yeu cause other
vehicles to slow, stop, and/or
wait (or crash inte you, for
that matter) while you per-
form a U-turn, you are con-
travening Section 170 of the
mighty Motor Vehicie Act.

There are, of course, other
areas where U-turns are
strictly prohibited:

BY Section: 170(b)(i) and (ii)
forbid reverse turns on a curve
and near the top of a hill. For
clarity, the Act adds that if you

seen by another vehicle for
150 meters then the move is
considered unsafe.
BR Section 170(b)(iii) rells us
not to turn around “at a place
where a sign prohibits making
a U-tarn...” which is one of
those redundaricies [often
mention. Obeying traffic con-
trol signs is covered by
Section 130,
@ Subsection (b)(iv) disallows
the U-Turn at intersections
controlled by traffic signals.
@ Finally, and probably the
most complicated of these
otherwise — straight-forward
prekibitions, Subsection
(b)(v) states that we cannot
make a U-tura in a business
distiict, except in intersections
where there are no traffic con-
trol signals. A business district
is defined as a territory, con-
nected by roads (at least 200
length), within
which buildings or structures
are used for business, industri-
al or public purposes. In

methods, U-turns are permit-
ted in almost any residential
area, certain areas of a busi-
ness district and just about
anywhere else outside of a
business district provided we
olgy the signs and we are
safe about it. In fact, | should
add, we are even permitted to

make a U-turn over a solid
yellow line, providing we do
net contravene any of the

above U-turn laws, Yellow
lines have been discussed in
previous previous columns.

control device which we've
all come to know and love as
