West Van rent relief denied

Council not convinced payment causes hardship

A WOMAN who sold her
waterfront property to West
Vancouver District in the
1970s will receive no relief
on the price she must pav to
continue to live in the home
she once owned on Argyle
Avenue.

Coun. Pat Boname was the only
council member to vote on Mon-
day against refusing Joan Green-
wood’s request for some relief.

When she asked for an expla-
nation, council members told
Greenwood that they did not con-
sider her payment to the district of

The Memorial Library Founda-
tion, a volunteer group, raised

$1,999,000 ($725,000 in grants) to:

less than budgeted.

and match whatever the founda-

Argyle residents wha have sold
to the municipality, as it acquires
waterfront property for a future
park at Ambleside, have negoti-
ated different deals that take
property values into account but
don't impose a rent.

“It’s park land that I'm living
on; it has no real estate value,’'
Greenwood said.

A renegotiation of Greenweod's
monthly payment would set a
precedent for the renegotiation of
other agreements made in the
area.

George Horwood, municipal
director of finance, warned that
granting ‘‘ad hoc relief’ to one
individual would result in other
hardship cases coming before
council.

munity for years,’’ said Boname,
