Over 100 players from across the province participated in the tournament, Champions from the North Shore included Martina Bernath, Brent) Dysart, Mark Grueter, Caren Rose, Sanjin Sudovich and dustin Walsh. All three were also tunner-ups in division play. Dysart and Sadovich squared- off in the boys under-l4 title match, with Dysart edging his 10-year-old opponent 7-6, 6-4. Later in the day, Dysart lost to Grueter in a tight under-16 title match 6-3, 6-7, 6-1. Sadovich avenged his under-14 title loss with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Vancouver’s Michael Levin to win the under-12 singles event. The titles won by Dysart, Gruecter and Sadovich marked their first provincial title victories in their tennis careers. On the girl's side, North Van- couver’s Rose won the under-18 singles title, coming back from an opening set loss to dominate Co- quitlam’s Kea Wong 5-7, 6-1, 6- 3 Following the long match, Rose took to the court in the under-16 final, but lost out to the strong play of Samantha Thomson, of Vancouver, 6-1, 6-2, Thomson also won the under-14 title, defeating West Vancouver's Katie Stewart 6-0, 6-1. In the under-12 singles final, North Vancouver's Bernath defeated Sandra Jacob of Rich- mond 6-2, 6-4, Walsh won the girls under-10 final with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Vancouver’s Suzana Palovic. In the junior men’s under-18 final, North Vancouver’s Tatsuys Nakagawa lost 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 to Mica Thiessen of Aldergrove. Also reaching a final was Rishan Kuruppy, of North Van- couver, who lost the under-!0 ti- tle, 6-3, 7-5, to Burnaby’s Jason Kukol. Teams playing champs tough THE NORVAN soccer club, defending Premier League na- tional champions, kicked-off their 1993-94 season with a home-field scoreless tie against the New Westminster Queens Park Rangers on Sunday, Sept. 12. Both Trevor White and Tim Smyth played strong games for Norvan in the hard fought match. Last Sunday, Norvan travelled across the city line to Ambleside Park to face the West Vancouver Trollers in an all-North Shore match-up. The North Vancouver side was down 2-6 at half on goals by West Vancouver's Mike Pennington and Paul Kitchener. Norvan fought Yack in the second half on a goal by Gerry Rochard, but West Vancouver regained their halftime margin on a goal by Jobn Fisher. In the final minute of the game, Norvan’s Mike Atkinson scored, but it was too little too late, as West Vancouver took the 3-2 win, Norvan’s next game is this Sun- day, Sept. 26, at 2 p.m. at Kinsman Stadium (Jones and 19th) in North Vanconver, against Club Ireland. .
