CHICKEN LEGS Back Atteched NV’s Sydor finishes | 12th im road race A NORTH Vancouver Olympic cyclist who placed 12th in the women’s 81- kilometre individual road race during the first day of the Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain, on Sun- day said she felt her per- formance has let people down. By Surj Rattan News Reporter Alison Sydor, 26, competed against Kathryn Watt of Australia, who won the cycling race, Sydor’s mother Maureen wat- ched her daughter race on televi- sion Sunday and talked to Alison on the telephone after the race. She said Alison was very disap- pointed in her showing. “Her biggest disappointment was that she feit she fet people down. She said the 5 p.m. start didn’t help, because they are used to starting early in the morning so the nerves really built up,’’ said Sydor. “There was also the heat fac- tor. She said it was quite a totally, totally different race." Maureen Sydor said that she felt the race was ‘very dull’ and also criticized the coverage of the race by the CTV network. - “The CTV announcer’s facts were all wrong, and he was not very well informed about the sport. It made a very dull race even worse, “| was so surprised that all the riders spent all the time watching each other. Most of those girls have beaten Alison before so they were not even watching her,’’ said Sydor. _Sydor’s manager Brent Mudry said he spoke with Canadian women’s Olympic cycling coach Karen Strong before the race and that Strong said the Sunday race Barceiona ’92 would be a bit of a gamble for all racers. ‘*Alison can win.anything she wants to this year, but the Olym- pic road race is always a bit of a lottery,’’ said Strong. Mudry said Sydof will remain in Barcelona and will compete against Watt in the Tour Feminin to be held in France from Aug. 13 to 23. Mudry said Sydor told him that ‘‘it will be exciting to race against Kathy. We get along well.’ Sydor was picked by Sports Il- lustrated in its July 22 edition to win the bronze medal in Sunday’s race. Sydor was Canada’s only pre- qualifier for the Olympic cycling team and represented one of Canada’s best chances for a medal. Last year she won the bronze at the world road championships in Germany, which was Canada’s best performance at that event. In 1991 Sydor won gold medals at the Mountain Bike World Cup in Switzerland and the national championships in Quebec. In other Olympic news, West Vancouver's Paige Gordon, 19, placed 16th in Sunday’s preliminaries in the women’s div- ing platform and has been elimi- nated from further competition. I knew 1 was in 12th position, Anything can go wrong on a back 3% twister off a 10-metre,’’ Gordon said Sunday. “It didn’t feel as bad as it was marked.
