WELL, IT seems that
everyone, including Quebec,
is talking about constitu-
tional reform — a fancy
word for what’s wrong with
Canada.

We've heard Canada’s socialist
provincial governments pushing
for social charters, Aboriginal

~ peoples pushing for self-govern-
ment, and of course, everyone
wants a hand in how to change
the Senate.

Small provinces, that is sparsely
populated provinces, want to have
the same number of senators as
the larger provinces, the older
provinces don’t want to lose their

_ upper hand, and provinces like
B.C., latecomers to the Canadian
confederacy, want more senators
than nation-founding Nova
Scotia.

Wow. It seems that everyone’s
in the car, and everyone wants to
drive, but no one wants to keep
his eyes on the road.

By this I mean that there is, or
appears to be, little or no com-
promise happening, no leadership

Finally, there is the question of
an equal Senate. This is by far, I
feel, the stupidest, most ridiculous
demand to come from a provincial
leader.

Why should Prince Edward
Island, with some 800,000 people,
have the same representation as
Ontario, with some nine million

people, in an elected body? This is
Canada, where we believe that
each individual is equal, where
each individual is entitled to the
same amount of representatives by
its percentage of its population.
Provincia! governments should
have no impact on the number of
senators, yet each province should
be recognized as a population
area, and it should receive the
number of senators relative to the

number of people it holds.

Certainly, it is important for us
to recognize that some provinces
joined Canada in 1867, and that
Others joined as late as 1949. But
that does not make the provinces
that joined at a later date any less
Canadian than those who have
been part of Canada for many
more years.
