AUTOMOTIVE Safety Council presents advice for motorcyclists ONE OF the traditional Signs of spring, along with robins, flowers and shorts, is the return of motorcycles to the streets and highways. May is traditionally the time that ICBC and motorcycle groups remind motorists of the special safety concerns faced by motorcyclists. Here, courtesy of the Canada Safety Council, are some tips for two and four-wheelers. One of the biggest problems motorcyclists face is the fact that other drivers often fail to see them. Car and truck drivers often cut motorcyclists off on lane changes and left turns. Motorists also seem to find it difficult to judge the speed of oncoming motorcycles, again resulting in left turn mishaps. The Safety Council suggests the following for motorcyclists: Wear bright-colored clothes and helmets, preferably with reflective tape: add reflectors and retro-reflective tape to the motorcycle; keep headlights and tail lights on for daytime riding; signal all lane changes well in advance; choose lanes and positions to avoid other drivers’ blind spots. Other general tips include: Slow down — nearly half of all riders invoived in serious or fatal injury mishaps were judged to have been speeding at the time of the acci- dent; use both brakes smoothly and gently; avoid sudden moves such as rapid lane changes in speed or direction; watch for uneven road surfaces. Many experienced motorcyclists tell new riders to assume they are “invisible”? on the road, and drive defensively. The Safety Council asks motorists to: Remember that motorcycles are back on the road and to watch for them; leave extra room when following motorcycles; take care not to cut off an on- coming motcrcycle — speed and distance away may be difficult to judge; remember that motor- cyclists may need to make sudden moves to avoid rough sections or obstructions on the road. A bit of extra care and atten- tion will help everyone share the road safely.
