THE LILY has heen asscciated with saintliness since early civilization.
Those pictured, calied Destiny, are among the hardiest of all tilies. Like
most, they are easy to grow, in well-drained soils and thrive in the cooling
shade of annuals, ground covers and low shrubs around their base.

Lilies provide variety

SPIDERLILY, WATERLILY,
daylily, lily-of-the-valley ... these
are just a few of the many hun-
dreds of plants which bear the
name “‘lily,”’ and yet are not really
lilies at all.

True lilies are members of only
one genus of the vast lily family —
the genus Lilium -— but it is wide-
ranging, indeed. In fact, it is hard
to think of a region in the northern
hemisphere that does not have a
native species or two. ;

Their main identifying charac-
teristic — hesides their beautiful
flowers — is most noticeable at
planting time. All true lilies pro-
duce bulbs, but not bulbs with
papery skins such as tiseir relatives,
the onion and the tulip. instead, li-
ly bulbs are covered with thick,
fleshy scales, actually modified
leaves. The bulbs can be further
distinguished from their near cela-

tives, the fritillarias, by the fact
that they lack the musky odor of
the latter.

Lilies as we know them today
are divided into categories based
on their origins. Asiatic Hybrids,
such as ‘Enchantment’ and ‘Con-
necticut King’ and other varieties,
have the widest range in color,
form and flowering season and are
among the hardiest, while Oriental
Hybrids are later-blooming and
mere difficult to grow.

American hybrids were devel-
oped from native North American
species and combine disease
resistance with early bloom. Many
species of lilies are still commonly
grown and these include Lilium
henryi (orange), Lilium regale
(large-flowered white) and, of
course, the beautiful and colorful
tiger lily (Lilium tigrinum). In fact,
there are lilies of every possible
size, shape and color.
