BC FERRIES has announced that
it will work with the BC Ferry and
Marine Workers’ Union to carry
out a survey of safety aboard the
corporation’s passenger ferries.

The announcement follows lob-
bying by the union for an in-
vestigation into the transportation
of dangerous goods aboard BC
Ferries passenger vessels.

Rita Johnston, Minister
Responsible for BC Ferries, said
that the corporation's agreement
to a safety review reinforces their
safety commitment to their pas-
sengers and crew.

But when the issue was initially
raised by the union earlier this
year, B.C. Ferries representatives
said there was no need for an in-
vestigation because the corporation
was already following all interna-
tional regulations that govern the
transportation of dangerous goods
aboard passenger vessels.

But said Johnston: ‘*BC Ferries
wants to make sure that their pas-
sengers feel justifiably confident
about travelling with BC Ferries.

“The British Columbia Ferry
Corporation is committed to safety
and committed to retaining the
confidence in their service that the
public has enjoyed for the past 29
years,’’ she said.
