SPORTS ENTHUSIASTS are str-
inging up their racquets in
preparation for the third annual
North Shore Open Racquetball
Tournament hosted by the North
Shore Winter Club.

Racquet clubs, individuals and
guests are invited to the five-day
event, presented by the North
Shore News, beginning Wednes-
day, Feb. 22 with the fimals on
Sunday, Feb. 26.

Tournament organizer Johanne
Budde said she expects about 100
people to sign up for the tourna-
ment, which includes mixed dou-
bles, mens singles, womens singles
and junior categories.

Each category is open to dif-
ferent levels of players, from
novice to pro. Darren Moran and
Rick Gartel, ranked among the top
five tennis players in B.C., will
participate in the event, but all
calibres of players are welcomed to
join.

Said Budde: ‘‘When it comes to
being competitive, I say to each
their own. Obviously, the higher
the calibre of the player, the more
competitive the game will be. But

for the beginners, the tournament
will be a lot of fun.”

Tickets for tournament partici-
pants are still available, but the
deadline is Monday, Feb. 20, at 3
p.m. Cast is $35 for the first event,
and $3 for each additional event.
Junior fee is $15.

The fee entitles participants to a
T-shirt, a cold buffet, pizza and
beer night, a full banquet Satur-
day, Feb. 25 at the Winter Club,
and a chance to win a trip for two
to Reno, Nev.

To encourage focal racquetball
clubs to participate, the Winter
Club will award a night for two at
the Pan Pacific Hotel to a member
of the club with the most partici-
pants.

Trophies will be awarded to the
first, second and third winners in
each event. Souvenir trophies will
be presented to all competitors.

Guest passes are available for
$15 — the banquet is $8.

North Shore Winter Club and
Court House West in North Van-
couver. For more information
