prove seniors housing has
been launched: by Canada
Mortgage and Housing Cor-
poration. .

The program, the first in a
series of biennial competi-
i tions, each on a different

wea] housing theme, comes at .a

tory.

A recent study by the na-
tional housing agency show-
ed that just over 10 per cent
of Canada’s population is 65
years or older. By the end of
the century, this number is
expected to increase to 13
per cent and to 25 per cent
an ; by the year 2031, when the

As a group, they are in a
position, as perhaps never
before in the history of
Canada, to afford a much
different level of accom-
modation and services need-
ed to make that lifestyle
possible and worry-free.

Winners of the prestigious
CMHC award will receive a
special plaque at a national
conference’on Housing Op-
tions for Older Canadians,
to be held in Halifax, Oct.
18-20. The awards will be
presented by the Hon.
Stewart McInnes, minister of
public works and minister
responsible for CMHC.

The competition is open to
anyone — individuals as well
as organizations — who has
come up with good,
workable ideas that have
been successfully demon-
strated in housing projects
built since Jan. 1, 1983.

There will be five awards
categories, covering financ-
ing. and tenure; technology
and production; | planning
and regulation; implementa-
tion/realization; and
management.

building techniques or pro-
cedures, efficient products
and materials, and financial
or tenure alternatives.
