Milestone hirthdays celebrated

ones who used to lie about their
age.

Others did it more quietly or
simply avoided the topic
altogether.

Today, perhaps as a result of the
overall aging of the Canadian
population, ‘‘milestone”’  birth-
days, including 30, 40, 50 and
beyond, are not just recognized,
they are being celebrated in style.

the fact that they are getting
older,”? says Linda Marlow, a
product supervisor at a Canadian
greeting card company.

“They often use the occasion of
a milestone birthday to throw a big
surprise party, tease a friend about
going ‘over the hill’ or send a card
that recognizes the occasion.”’

Millions of Canadians are
members of the ‘“‘baby boom’’
generation born between 1946 and
1964. The first wave of this
sizeable group turned 40 in 1986,
and it’s a safe bet that many more

will receive humorous 40th birth-
day cards in 1987 and years to
come.

‘Age-specific cards are really
becoming popular,’’ Marlow said.

“Of course, many people still
prefer traditional cards to mark
birthdays,’’ says Marlow. ‘‘Such
cards continue to be very popular.

‘However, for those who count
the candles and like a laugh, age-
specific birthday cards can provide
a fun way to celebrate getting
older."
