They are an inexpensive pick- me-up which we all deserve after a winter of our normally grey, wet days. There are a number of less common, but equally fascinating members of this family of primulas available in most garden centres; here are a few tu look out for. P. Auricula has grey-green leathery leaves, the: flowers are normally yellow or purple, but re- cent hybridization has pxoduced _ some attractive bi-colored forms. P. Rosea produces bright pink flowers on: six-inch stems early, before the development of the leaves. It would prefer a slightly boggy location and careful water- ing during the summer months. The drumstick primrose or P. Denticulata produces pompoms of flowers on 12-inch stems in white, blue, purple and violet. Harder to find, but really worth having is, P. Vialii, with its dense spike of violet flowers somewhat reminiscent of the red hot poker plant (Knipphofia). The candelabra hybrids current- ly known as P. x ‘Bressingham Seedlings’ were Originally collected in our Stanley Park, donated to Alan Bloom, the famous English perenial specialist. After growing them in Bress- ingham Gardens for several years, he introduced them to the buying public as Bressingham Seedlings. Last year they arrived on the local market under the same name, and if you see them again this year, buy them.
